I've been bleaching my hair for some years now, and my hair is really damaged from this. I'm considering toning it instead, but I'm not sure if it will get the whiteness as I want? Does anyone know if it's possible to get a platinum blonde color with only toning?

Also, does toning work almost the same as bleaching? That you have it in the hair till you get the color/lightness you want? Or does toning stop working at one time?

I've used Redken Extreme and Joico K-pak Reconstruct treatments, but I don't think the hair really gets any better with these products. Any suggestions?

Oh, and does hair extensions (keratin) -really- damage the hair so much that a lot of people says?

Toning does not lighten the hair. Toning is used to neutralize unwanted pigment. Its mainly used after someone gets their hair highlighted with bleach. It will get rid of any unwated tones in the hair such as orange or yellow. You still need to bleach your hair if you want to be blonde but you can use toning incase you have a yellow tint to your hair or any warmth. Toning is an ammonia free color. I almost always tone with Shades eq from Redken. Toning will not damage the hair but you will still need to lighten your hair using a highlight color or bleach. I do know that in schwarzkopf they have a highlift color series and 12-1 lightens the hair beautifully without much warmth to the hair. But it also depends on what your naturally hair color level is. If you are naturally a level 5 or below, you probably will not achieve the lightness you want with a highlift color. Hope that helps!

Toning will not lighten the hair. At all. As mentioned above, it is used to neutralize unwanted color that was left by the bleach. If your hair is as damaged as it seems, extensions might be a nice break for your natural hair.

Uhm, it's called toning in Norwegian.. Highlights maybe then?

I'm a 7 naturally, dark blonde.

I'm wondering what for example Holly Madison in 'Girls Next Door' uses to get her hair so white? Her hair also looks so thick and healthy..

Toning is a very good addition to bleaching for people looking to get rid of that brassy look, I have been bleaching for over 13 years and only in the last 5 have been using a great toner, i recommend Wella's "white lady", No, it will not lighten your hair, but it'll make it look WHITER.

As for hair extensions, yes, a majority of extensions CAN damage your hair, one of the most damaging (yet most common) is fusion.

If you're a DIY'er go with hair wefts.

And for the record the playboy girl wears extensions.
