10% tip ok?

I understand that you're a student and it also may be that you're from a different culture but not tipping is a big NO NO. Here in the US the hairstylest in most of the salons make low wages and depend on their tips for income. It's not the hair cutter who is getting the money for the prices the salon is charging.

 
I live by the motto "always overtip"(My Blue Heaven) and it shows. I always get last minute appointments, never have to wait and even had my hairdresser bump another appointment after confiding in me, "oh, she never tips, she can wait". Of course, being a former waitress and management now has influenced my appreciation for good service.

 
Just curious, why is 20% the norm for tipping a hair stylist? I don't recall it always being this way.

Do they get paid below minimum wage like restaurant servers do, and rely on tips to make up for that?
