Q: Help! I have a date tomorrow, but a huge, red pimple just popped up. How can I get rid of it quickly?

A: First, take a closer look at that bump: Is it just on the surface of the skin, or is it the underground cystic variety that feels sore when you press it? If it's a superficial eruption, before bedtime apply one of the new gel pimple fighters formulated to work all night long. The outside layer will dry into a protective rubberlike barrier that prevents the key ingredients -- usually oil-eating salicylic acid and redness-reducing panthenol -- from rubbing off. Try Biore Blemish Bomb, $6.99.

If the area is still reddish in the morning after you've peeled off the gel, dab on a green-toned concealer to counteract ruddiness, then pat the surrounding area with pressed powder. Try Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Pressed Powder, $23. If, alas, you're stuck with a deep cystic pimple, the only thing that works is to have your dermatologist inject it with cortisone (for about $30) to immediately reduce redness and shrink it, says Stuart H. Kaplan, a Beverly Hills, California, dermatologist. Right before your date, cover up any remaining spot with the same concealing tactics mentioned above.
