I think toners are milder than astringents and astringents contain way more alcohol. I always thought people used astringents if they had really oily or acne prone skin. I could be wrong tho

yeah you're right. toners and astringents are essentially the same type of product. but the difference is that toners are for normal to combination skin with an alcohol content of 4 to 15%, they also tone, (or tighten )the skin.

in an astringent they can have alcohol up to 35% and are for oily and acne prone skin.they help to remove excess oil but can be too drying and cause more harm than good. when i was in school my teacher told us that if you use an astringent and you look at your cotton or whatever you're using it looks like dirt, but what it actually is, is your acid mantle which is used to protect your skin from bacteria and microorganisms. the acid mantle may also help in the skins shedding and renewal process. well man that was a lot of typing, hope it helped.

toners balance the skin. astringents remove oil from and tighten the skin.

I never really thought about it, but I know I've had the same question in the past! Now I know! Thanks Hunnie for asking the question, and thanks everyone else for answering it!

I forgot to mention this earlier, if u use something like an astringent to help with oily skin, if you use it too much, can't it make your skin even more oily? I think someone told me that once, so I guess, if you choose an astringent maybe its something not too be used too often

There are alcohol free toners, and usually that's what I've been recommended to use and currently use. I have very oily skin, but the alcohol free toners are much more mild and don't cause my skin to want to produce more oil....like an astringent would do.

i like the neutragena aha pore refiner toner. but my skin isn't oily either, it's norm. to dry. but with the aha if you have sensitive skin it may sting a little. i love the stuff though makes me feel clean.
