Just curious as to what you all feel/believe:

Do you feel it's the products (cleanser, toner, moisturizer, sunscreen, etc.) that are more important, or do you feel it's the ingredients? Are these products and/or ingredients you believe are beneficial to your skin care regimen and/or overall skin care?

(I believe this to be a different sense of thread than that found here...)

Good thread Aquilah.

Well I think the 2 most important words in a product are OIL FREE!!! But Im still young (almost 19) so I still dont know all the good products. I just experiment. I think as long as there isnt a million different ingredients in the product im sold

I always look at the ingredients. My skin is sensitive so I don't want to take a chance. Thankfully I don't break out anymore and I think me being careful with the ingredients is part of it.

I believe that cleanser/toner/moisturiser/sunscreen etc are all vitally important. but i also beleive that high quality ingredients and ingredients that work for your skin type are vitally important too. So to me, they are both important.

Some of my favourite ingredients would include: AHA, BHA, anti-oxidants and lavender is quite nice as well. Tea Tree and Calendula are good too.

Well...the products are the ingredients, and the ingredients are the products. It's the ingredients that deliver. But I guess its more or less important for different people. Being extremely acne-prone, and now interested in organic products, I personally check the ingredients of every product I use.

I think it's a combination of both. But I'm a huge experimenter. I've tried like everything. I think I'm finally happy with my $8 Aveeno foaming cleanser. Yeah...really glad I had mom spend $130 on those Dermalogica products that didn't do ANYTHING to help! Oh well...you live and you learn I guess.

As long as it gets its job done, I am a fan but I guess it would be the ingredients that is important to me because I just finally got into reading what was and what wasnt good in facial products and Geeze you will be shocked to find out that a lot of these products have ingredents that will cause us to break out.

Like what sort of ingredients? Im starting to read the ingredients list and thank god I didnt find anything harmful in my current skin care products. But does anyone know specifically what ingredients are a big no-no?

Great question! I generally look at what the "famed" ingredient is, and then check out Paula Begoun's site for what she thinks about it. However, I've noticed she seems to be against almost everything on earth LOL! It's hard to go by her thoughts/opinions sometimes. You know? When in doubt, I always check threads here to see what others think about a product/ingredient.

They are both important to me! Sometimes I don't look at the ingredients compostition when I'm buying a product simply because I'm not looking for a particular ingredient in it. I'm just wanted to get a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, etc. that works for me. However, if I'm looking for some targeted treament products for freckles, hyperpigmentation, t-zone oil control, skin hydraytion..., I'll definitely read the ingredients label in order to make sure they contain what I'm after.

I have had all kinds of problems with my facial skin because of excessive oil.

I only trust products that my dermatologist and plastic surgeon have recommended. Anything I bought, over the counter, has never worked.

The prescribed Tretinoin and Neo Medrol acne medication are no more expensive than equivalent over the counter products.

I used to think it was the ingredients.. until i did some research. I have always been very acne prone, i dont mean mild acne.. i mean extremely bad acne. I tried proactiv, retin-a, AHA's, even the murad system. Now in theory the Murad had all the ingredients to get me clear. It had a salicyclic acid and triclosan cleanser which should have cleared the dirt and bacteria from deep in my pores. THey had an exfoliating gel which had retinol in it which should have speed up my skin turnover, and it also had a sulfur overnight treatment gel which should have dried up my existing pimples. The moisturizer was oil free and had retinol and arnica..Theoretically it should have kept me acne free, and it didn't. Nothing did. Until i tried an all natural face wash by Desert Essence that contained nothing but castile soap, olive oil, castor oil, and teatree. Which was amazing because as oily as my skin is, it thought a cleanser with oil would have broken me out.

I am finding the simpler the regimen the better my skin is. I am using an all natural face wash(2x a day) followed by aloe vera moisturizer, witch hazel during the day if my skin gets oily..

the only thing that's important to me is that it doesn't break me out and it doesn't have long-term effects. i guess those would fall under ingredients.

The ingredients, at least to some extent ... for some products, like cleansers, I honestly can't tell a difference between different products. (Or at least, my acne and oily skin is always the same, regardless of what kind of cleanser I use!) But with acne products, ingredients definitely make a difference for me! 2.5% benzoyl peroxide has been great at clearing up my acne, but 10% benzoyl peroxide dries out my skin too much. And acne products with salicylic acid don't seem to do anything for my skin! So for acne treatments, I definitely look at ingredients. For products like cleansers and moisturizers, I'll try anything that is noncomedegenic.

Ingredients rates very high for me. I have sensitive skin and prone to hyperpigmentation, so I am on a evil cycle of breakouts and pigmentation.

i'm more concerned with the product claims than the ingredients in most cases. i do try to avoid using products that contain mineral oil or petroleum.

hm...both for me. depending on what my skin needs. sometimes i need an acne wash sometimes i dont. but that has changed. im going back to plain dove soap. when i used it i didnt break out.

My sunscreen is soo important to me.. if I could only choose one Item that would be it. The sunscreen I use has stopped my facial redness and calmed my skin dramtically. I can feel confident more without worrying I'm going really red

I believe that the ingredients are important, but so are the products. Mostly everyone needs a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. You don't need to use a toner, unless you really want to.
