Q: What defines aging skin? Is it chronological age or the way one's skin looks? I have small lines appearing around my mouth and under my eyes. I also have deeper lines that run from the corners of my nose to the corners of my mouth that appear to make my face look older. Should I be using products for aging skin?
A: According to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a leading dermatologist and founder of the eponymous skincare line, there are many environmental factors that contribute to premature aging of the skin such as sun exposure, air pollution, and lifestyle (think diet, alcohol, stress, sleep habits, and cigarettes). "Thus, there is no exact chronological age at which a person is deemed to have aging skin and all of us must assess our skin on an individual basis," he says. The good news: you can easily incorporate products into your current skincare regimen to counteract the first signs of aging. Dr. Perricone's picks? A combination of products including a hydrating eye cream; a face treatment containing vitamin C, grapeseed extract, or coenzyme Q10; and a moisturizing SPF lip treatment. "Another possibility, however, is that you and your skin are simply dehydrated, which can also make skin look lined," says Dr. Perricone. If that's the case, make sure you're using a proper moisturizer. The drier your skin, the more hydrating ingredients your moisturizer should contain.
