Hi all

I need some advice, I've been abusing my now quite long hair for about 3 yrs with highlights and the color at the ends is now going " mushy" all blended into the same nondescript blonde were as my root and midlengths are well, highlighted properly and you can see the 2-3 blonde colors. Question is do you think its safe to do a home dye on it? I am sooo skint at the moment I just cant afford the £80 to get my lights put in but I'm having to put my hair up in a bun to hide the ends at work ( I work in cosmetics and would get slaughtered by my boss if she saw it) I'm worried that the ends will soak up more dye and end up a dodgy color any advice would be great.

Thanks

Are you trying to imitate the highlights that you already have or an all over color? Even though you may not have the $$, I would suggest going to a professional because you never know what can happen. My mom tried highlighting her own hair and it came out really bad. Spent more money to fix it and her hair was damaged.

Perhaps Janelle (NYAngel98) or other users will have more advice for you.

I'm planning on going back to my base color which is very dark mahogany- think Cathrine Z jones, my lights are honey and golds. Honestly cant afford to go to a salon

i would start over like what you want to go back to. it's hard to do the rest of the highlights through your hair. plus salon highlights are expensive.

but dark hair is in during the winter for that "warm" look since highlights are more summery.. ya know??

I agree with Liz - I think darker hair is always nice during the fall/winter seasons. And if you want to go darker, do the roots and mid-section first - then about 8-10 minutes before your end process time, comb it through to the ends... If the ends are a lot drier, they won't need as much time to absorb the color. And I would reccomend a GOOD trim... at least 2-3 inches. (or as much dead ends that you can spare). It will look a lot healthier and even though dark color helps to hide damaged hair - a trim is always good when you cut.

I just did this with mine, the only problem I've had is that it oxidized SO fast. so my hair is barely darker than it was before, and the dye was pretty darn dark, too. So beware, it could definitely happen.

Nope! I was in the sun for a couple hours once, a few days after, but that's all. That might've been it, but I don't know. It's not bad what it's changed to...but not what I wanted.

At the moment I use Origins rich rewards conditioner to try to stop the frizz but I'm having to use it 3-4 times a week!

So I'm definitely going to have a trim ( I dont mind going to " granny hairdressers" for a trim, but not a color!)Can any one recommend a good intensive conditioner and a good home dye kit thats available over here in the UK?

You always give such good advice honey! I'm gonna try this the next time i dye my hair at home because my ends are really dry too.

If you do decide to do an at home dye, I wouldnt buy it at at department store. I would go to a Beauty supply store such as Sally's or something and get a professional color and developer to do it. Thats what I use on my hair and when I color my moms hair and it always lasts longer and looks better than a department store dye.

I have been REALLY blond and now I am quite dark with highlights. I've learned 2 things: If you are going lighter-- GO TO A PROFESSIONAL! Do not TRY to put any sort of lightening bleach or products near your head-- especially if it's already processed!

Also, I was really blond and I decided to go darker. I did this at home with no issues at all. I used Garnier Nutrisse (got it at the drugstore) and it looks amazing. It came out great and the color has barely faded. I did have to get some highlights put in to break up the color though.. I did that at a salon of course!

Did you find that your highlights started to come through the full head color? thats one of the things I'm worried about, the other is the ends going a dodgy color.

I have dyed my hair pretty much every color under the sun... and mostly I have done this at home because I do not have a steady income

, so I think it is fine to dye over salon highlights, especially to a darker color because the highlighted areas will take the color well. If you are worried about the ends taking the color TOO much, I know that the at-home-dye kit of L'Oreal Excellence has this additional product in it that you put on the ends of your hair before dyeing to prevent it from absorbing too much dye and also from damage. I usually use L'Oreal Feria, and the color comes out wonderfully. I have oftentimes home-dyed over salon highlights and processing, and as long as you CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION after dyeing, it will not be damaged.

The only thing I would NOT recommend is lightening/bleaching your hair while the highlights are still in it... as this would REALLY damage the hair!! But that is pretty much common logic, because if you are bleaching over a lightened area and a darker area, obviously the lighter area will become more processed and be problematic.

Hope I helped!
