Hi Everyone!! Just wondering what your views are on tanning beds. I used to tan a few years ago and was thinkin about it again, i am concerned about all these reports i have heard about more and more young women being diagnosed with skin cancer. just wondering if you have any thoughts. Is there such a thing as smart tanning maybe?????

oh i am not sure i think everything is "bad" for you my mom has a tanning bed in her house and has been using it 3 to o4 times a week for like 4 years so far no cancer. i think some people are more prone to cancer then others. maybe you can try searching google for a special tanning lotion and still gets u tan but protects you better or go to your local taning salon and ask them a few questions i think sun causees freckles right? not sure about tanning beds but in order to see results from a tanning beds u have to go in at least 3 times to get good base tan and then keep it up for as long as u wish. my mom always goes in a few times before she goes on trips or in the sun so she isnt " white" and doesnt burn her skin

I know it helps with my acne, but I worry about the risks of skin cancer........and the last time I did it I got some brown age spots around my mouth that haven't gone away yet.......no more tanning for me

I think if you tan smart (2 times per week) then once per week to keep your glow, it should be fine, I've been tanning for years..........now I take a tanonce per week , it makes me feel good, my skin looks great......................make sure you have the right lotion and don't abuse it.................Just my toughts............good luck

I love having some color, but tanning is just plain BAD for your skin. There are so many good self tanners out there now anyway, you can have a tan without going to a tanning bed and cooking yourself. I've had to have moles removed because I did a little too much sun worshipping in my younger days. JMO... Also, I'm going to move this thread to the Bath, Body, Fragrance and Beauty in General Forum. :glasses:

no thanks for me. tan can look fake on me if we go past the "glowing" face. and i already have too much moles on my arms, i don't want cancer.

Some people's skin can handle it and other's can't. So for my friend to stay in the sun for a few minutes would cause her to get a rash etc, but for me, nothing.

Yup. A lot of people don't realize that both UVA and UVB rays are damaging, even though UVB rays are the ones that make your skin turn red. So, even if your skin is darker without being red, it's still damaged. Melanocytes (skin cells) produce melanin in response to damage. Any difference in skin color means your skin has been damaged by UVA or UVB radiation.

And everyone does have different skin, so some people may never see the side effects of sunworshipping (spots, leathery skin, etc.) and lots of people never develop skin cancer. Unfortunately, a lot of damage does not show up in the skin until years after it has occured, and damage is cumulative. Sunscreen is still a good idea for healthy skin.

I used to tan but havent in about a year. I wanna get some color but Im afraid of skin cancer and everything. So Im probably just going to stick to my natural skin color.

Anyone who says tanning isn't bad for you is in denial. From my job, I know tons of ladies who have really bad skin damage from tanning. If you tan, it will damage your skin plain and simple. It doesn't matter how good your genes are. Then you have the added risk of skin cancer. I just don't understand why people would do it to themselves!

Also, I've never met one bed tanner that didn't have an orange tint in their skin.

I had a teacher in high school that use to worship the sun. She would beg people constantly not to tan because of what it did to her skin. She was barely 50 but could pass for a 70 year old, her skin was that wrinkled. She told stories of how she would be out with her mother and they would think her mother was actually her daughter.

Don't do it! If you really want to look tanned, I suggest self tanners as posted above.

I used to but now I have stopped. I'd rather have fair skin that's healthy than tanned skin that's not. What's so bad about fair skin anyway, i love it!

I think it's kind of dumb on people's behalfe's. You want to look absolutely gorgeous now, but think about when you're 40 and you want to look good for your age..... you can't, you'll look good for looking 50 years old. I think maybe a couple tans during the summer are ok. My tan from last May is still a little noticable.

I love tanning beds even thought they are bad for you... I'm stubborn. But, I'm slowly going to try to wean myself away from them and try spray tan and creams.

geez you know i used to tan from the time i was like 15 to 18 every summer. Im 21 now and i havent tanned since, I used Victorias Secret Bare Bronze lotion last summer but the smell of it just got me so sick after awhile. I was putting it on before bed and then washing it off as soon as i woke up and like a tanning salon u would build a nice tan. The thing is it can be pricey but i guess so are tanning salon memberships.

Well I have been so anti booth/bed tanning for so long and my boyfriend who is preparing for bodybuilding competitions started tanning to it made him look nicer and he got so dark and looks so good. I got jealous and started going myself! I only went twice so far and I like it but i have sooo much guilt. Now I don't want to go anymore after i just purchased a month! uuuuggghhh! I don't know

The lotions may give u more of a orangey look but its soo much better.

I think tanning is just like smoking, drinking or anything else that has purported risk. You choose to do it or you don't based on the information that is available.

There are people that will tan twice in their life and they will or won't have a problem. There are people that will tan everyday for 30 years and something or nothing will happen. There are people that will never see the sun or a tanning bed their whole life and something will or won't happen. No one knows.

I don't tan per se in tanning beds or by laying out in the sun, but I do like to get outside and in the sun for at least an hour or so several times a week. That gives me just enough color to "glow" with what some refer to as a healthy look.

My grandson told me I have grandma hands :rotfl: because they are wrinkled. I was a little stunned when he first said that, but after some thought realized it may be due to commuting to work daily facing the direction of the sun for years. My hands probably got more sun since they were on the steering wheel just beneath the windshield practically everyday for years.

Fortunately the rest of me hasn't had that much exposure and isn't showing signs of early aging so far.

On another note, we do need to get a little sun from time to time to replenish Vitamin D I believe it is. I have the understanding that by always using sun.screen and/or never getting any sun we run the risk of Vitamin D deficiency. Will have to google the result of Vit D deficiency...I can't remember all of it.
