I was just watching TV and in the news, the city of Victoria is planning to ban tanning beds. Do you go fake and baking in tanning beds? Do you think they are dangerous?

They're trying to ban them here. I think it was last year a girl dying of skin cancer ran a campaign to get them completely banned. I have never used them, but I feel that if you are informed of the risks associated with them then you should be allowed to use them. If you are going to ban tanning beds then you should ban things like cigarettes as well. IMO.

Banned seems like a little much. I know people who had such a vitamin D deficiency that their doctor told them to go to a tanning bed 2x a week.

I think there should be stricter rules as to who and how often you can use them.

Banning seems a little extreme I would say. Like Jackie said, there should perhaps be more regulation on them, but not banning.

I agree on stricter rules. Anyone under 18 has no business using a tanning salon. I see sooo many 15, 16 year olds with excessively dark tans (the kind of color you know is from a tanning salon, not from self tanners) in winter over here. Everybody else is pretty white, so you can really spot them from a crowd lol. To get this dark, they´ll probably have to go at least 3 or 4 times a week, on a regular basis.
Don´t agree on getting Vit D from tanning beds. Taking supplements is less harmful, and you´ll know how many mg of Vitamin D you´re getting every day.

I think back in the days a lot of doctors recommended tanning beds for Vit D deficiency or even seasonal depressive disorder. But since we have learned more about the dangers of tanning beds that´s not such good advice anymore.

i have good reason for agreeing tanning beds are dangerous. my daughter used to take some pre tanning sessions prior to summer vacation. she did this for about 5 years. she would tan in the beds once or twice a week for 3 months. last year she was diagnosed with basil cell carcinoma and the first question the surgeon asked was did she use a tanning bed. she tanned in the nude and she had 2 spots that couldn't have been caused by any other cause. one was right between the bottom of her breasts and the other one was on her hip where all her swim suits cover. she is fine. there was no disfiguration but yes tanning beds caused her cancers. she is lucky. some people aren't.

I used tanning beds as a teenager and that was only once or twice at a nail salon. As years went by I never really saw the need for tanning beds. Recently I watched Dr. Phil and there were several ladies on their who were obsessed with tanning beds, sprays and the SUN! The Dermatologist could recognize new signs of aging and what could be sun damage which will eventually lead to skin cancer. Always wear sun screen and enjoy the sun every now and then but don't use tanning beds every week.
