hi all,

i recently tried a new mascara and whilst i didnt get the traditional 'itchy eyes' feeling that i have heard people talk about, my eyes just went kind of red and bloodshot.

has this happened to anyone as an allergic reaction to mascara or eye makeup?

seeing my optometrist for new reading glasses soon anyway, but maybe someone has experienced this sort of symptom?

i've experienced it yeah, but with my pollen allergies. i also had the upper lid's waterline very sensitive and couldn't stand putting anything on my eyes for a few days.

maybe it's a sign of allergy in your case.

It sounds like its just irritating, maybe because of flaking or loose particles. Even if you aren't allergic, I'd stop using the mascara. Red eyes aren't a good look, even if they aren't a side effect of allergies.

ditto with kemper. Maybe try one that isnt waterproof, or just apply it to the ends of lashes to reduce the amount of product/nearness to your eye

I've had this happen before, sometimes theres a particular ingredient that doesn't agree with you. Some of the fibre mascaras are well known for this reaction.

What mascara was it?

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I'm not fond of eye makeup because of this problem too. If I try to put on mascara (water-proof or not), or liner (pencil), I will have a teary eye and feel darned uncomfortable. It doesn't matter if I'm wearing contacts or not. I don't think it's an allergy, maybe I just don't put on eye makeup often enough for my eyes to get used to things falling in them. So any suggestions to the OP will be helpful for me too!

I've had this problem, but not due to makeup. I have dry eye which I use drops for.

this happens to me too and i stopped wearing eyeshadow. i think ive worn eyeshadow like 3x this year so far. Right now due to the pollen im experiencing a little swelling but not too much.

the only eye allergies I've had were to liners & shadows & my eyes would swell up huge & burn & then feel like sandpaper for days afterward & be very tender. But I would not use that mascara anymore if I were you.

i think what really irritated my eyes was the waterproof mascara. I do own clear mascara or ill take a spoolie and put some vaseline on it just to get rid of the eyeshadow powder. I pretty much just stick to fluidlines.
