i realise this has been covered 100 times so i apologise in advance. ive used the search but couldnt find the exact answer so here goes.

ive decided i need to start using sunscreen, i didnt think it was necessary to use in the winter but alas. would it be better to use a sunscreen or a moisturizer with sunscreen in it? ive been trying to find moisturizers with sunscreen but i havent had any luck. any brands you can recommend? i have oily skin.

also, how much spf is really necessary?

and where should i apply it? just on my face or every bodypart that isnt covered by clothes?

thanks

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you will want a product that is noncomedogenic (won't clog pores). The only noncomedogenic sunscreen that I know of is Coppertone Oil-Free which my dermatologist recommended, but of course there may be some others I haven't heard of.

If you can find a moisturizer with sunscreen in it, make sure you use enough to get the full effect of the sunscreen. I know a lot of people that use makeup with built-in sunscreen don't use enough of the makeup to get the full SPF on the label (you usually have to pile it on like a mask!), but I'm not sure if that's a common problem with moisturizers.

As for where to apply it, my dermatologist is adamant about applying sunscreen everywhere, every day to prevent skin cancer and premature aging...

Those are just my thoughts!

hi! i have a couple other suggestions and things that might be helpful to know about sunscreen. kim is right that you are probably fine with an spf 15 for everyday.

i was confused by the whole "sunscreen has to be reapplied every two hours to be effective" thing, but i finally bought a book about sunscreen and figured out what they are talking about. you only need to reapply every two hours if you are in the sun for two hours straight because uvr rays are the rays that break down the effectiveness of the sunscreen (unless you are wearing pure zinc sunscreen, and trust me, you don't want to. unless you want to look like a ghost!) so if you are in and out of work and school, you are fine!

i have been looking at laura mercier's tinted moisturizer with spf 20 on sephora, and it won an allure best of beauty award, so i am thinking about trying that myself, though i haven't tried it yet.

you have to make sure to apply enough, otherwise you won't get the promised spf. so what i do is apply just an oil free sunscreen and apply the right amount. before i do that i put on the tiny bit of moisturizer i need and let it set in a bit before applying sunscreen. that way i'm getting the right amount of sunscreen and moisturizer. but i'm sort of obsessive, so i'm sure you will be fine with a moisturizer with spf.

and i wouldn't put it all over my body everyday - i don't! your clothes provide some spf. i apply some to my neck and hands - two places that age first. hope this helps!

I use Olay Age Defying (protective renewal lotion with beta hydroxy), it has SPF 15. This one seems ok, it has 3% zinc oxide which doesn't give me bumps under my skin. Whatever Nutrogena uses gave me so many bumps it turned me off spf products for 2 years.

ooh! thought i would give you some recommendations for some products i have tried and like. i have tried a lot! peter thomas roth has some nice products, and so does ddf. ddf has a COMPLETELY matte spf 30 sunscreen! it is lovely! i recommended it to my friends and finally got them to start using sunscreen because this one is effortless! it is 23 dollars i think, but lasts a long time and works so well. this way, you can use a moisturizer you love and whatever makeup you love.

oil of olay is great too! i think it is a nice moisturizer!

It's great that you are thinking of using a sunscreen every day. Like Kim said, you will be so glad you did as you get older. It really is the most important product you can use to prevent wrinkles and aged skin. USE IT...every single day!

I use Dr Denese SPF 30 Defense Day Cream. It is moisturizing and it also has a slight tint from melanin content.

I have dry skin so I use a moisturizer also but you may find that this works for you.

Sunscreen in the winter is a must! Just because there isn't as much sun doesn't mean it isn't as deadly. In winter, we also have clouds and snow which reflects a lot of the UV rays. I think snow reflects somewhere from 30% to 90% of UV rays.

I use a moisturiser with sunscreen and would say that SPF15+ is good. I'm using the Kose Day Milk which is SPF25 PA+. I have oily skin.

But... moisturisers with sunscreen is kind of deceptive. They need to be slathered on to give the skin adequate protection- when testing for efficiency, companies slap on up to 1oz of sunscreen on the tester's body- that's nearly 25% of a standard sunscreen tube :/ Studies have shown that people usually apply only half of the sunscreen they should be applying.

So unless you put huge drops of your moisturiser on your face, it's a better idea to either apply sunscreen separately or get one with a high SPF, like 30 or 50. And make sure it protects against UVA too.

Also, if you use a sunscreen with a high SPF, you won't have to re-apply as often. The down side is that they will probably be thicker.

Very good point! I often wonder if I am using enough, so I put on a little bit more...

I use european sunscreens like Vichy & LRP with a high ppd (Persistent Pigment Darkening) rating because it's the most effective against UVA and most of these have mexoryl (if not all). Unfortunately, these aren't available in the US so I envy those in Europe that can walk into a drugstore and puchase these since it's expensive to order. I have hyperpigmentation from melasma & sunworshipping so it's essential for me. Nothing available in the US gives me the ultimate protection..even the SPF 50 and way over since the PPD rating is so low. Oh well, hopefully the FDA will someday approve mexoryl.

Why are we always the last to get these great new products?!

A simple ingredient that could actually be effective on skin could cost manufacturers big bucks in disappointing "cures" to wrinkles, melasma, and aging. I found that out after spending tons of money on procedures and treatments that didn't work or made it worse...then treating it internally (& reasonably) and using an effective sunscreen was all I needed.

L'oreal and Lancome make products with mexoryl. They've available on http://strawberrynet.com They're a Hong Kong e-store but I've ordered heaps of times and they offer free international delivery

I never leave home without wearing La Roche-Posay Anthélios XL Fluide Extreme 60; I swear by it. In addition to the high SPF, it most importantly has the highest IPD & PPD I can find, does not leave a white cast, and is not sticky. (It passes the "bangs test" with flying colors!) I order it direct from a chemist in the U.K. to avoid the awful Internet price-gougers.

This sunscreen has mexoryl (sp?) which is the best known sun blocker out there but unfortunately you cnant get it in the us. Thanks FDA!
What sight do you order this from? I may have to ask my cousin to send me a bottle. I forgot to get it while I was over there.

i have used most of the Moisterizers from DDF with sunscreen. In my opinion most of them work well. They all have different puposes. I like them and continue to use them.
