Hey, everyone. I'm sorry I don't have a picture of myself I can put on here, but I currently have long, straight hair. I'm going in to get it cut and colored on Thursday, but am not sure which way to go with it. It's had long layers that by now have kind of gone flat, and I'd love some ideas for what you all might think is a sexy style for long hair. Whatever happens, I can't bear to go any shorter than shoulder length, but am feeling like I need a change. An old boyfriend from the past has resurfaced in my life, so I want to make a good impression even more than ever.

I'm 39, but I like to think I'm still fairly young looking.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated? Any ideas?

TIA!

Amy

Hairstyle: Maybe a feathered layered look about medium length (if you get what I mean)

Colour: This depends on your skin tone... if your pale/fair stay away from warm golden tones, stick with cool ash browns, or platinum blondes.

If your tanned or darker you can go with warm colours like golds and rich browns. If you don't want a all over colour have some highlights that blend with your natural colour

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice, Katie! Especially for the thoughts on the cut. I want to try something new, but I'm a little out of the loop as far as what's current and sexy.

I have darkish brown hair and neutral to warm toned skin.

I tried looking at the "Ultimate HairStyle Thread" but, for some reason, am unable to open it.

The hair cut dosen't have to be 'in' it just has to suit you

x Yeah, I know....

I just run out of ideas sometimes. And with the prospect of something that could finally be going on in my love life, I want to get a hairstyle to suit the occasion.

shoulder length isn't bad, but have you considered going just above the shoulder? an above-the-shoulder cut is probably your best bet for achieving volume. the longer your hair is, the more weight the strands and it pulls your hair down more. why not try some piecey layers? layers can help a lot, no matter what length. plus you can do a lot with them, like curl them under or flip them out. you might even consider getting a body wave done, or you can get loose waves that fall out within a few months..just some ideas.

as for the cut, personally i don't like really light highlites on dark brunettes..make sure you go with lites that aren't too far from your natural color, otherwise it will look bad. good luck, and have fun with your new hair!

I also have long, extremely straight hair. I have numerous layers with the shortest about chin level in the front. It's the only way I can have any body at all. When My hair was shoulder length, I kept layers also, but they were still longer. It was just flat as flat can be if I didn't. Where is our hair expert???

There really isn't much as far as cut options for really long hair... it seems to look best with layers and angles. And depending on how short the layers start, can vary the look

Thanks, everyone.

My hair actually hits just below my shoulder blades. I agree about the layers and the angles. There are just so many variations of this. I'm not sure what works best to, for example, make one's face look thinner? Last time I got a cut, I got the sides angled, starting just at the chin level. And longer layers throughout. Some part of me would like to try something a little more...daring? Can you say, "mid-life crisis"?

I hear ya... its a classic style, but sometimes you want more 'oomph'

Usually brushing the angles inward can make your face appear thinner. Have you been able to open the style thread?? There's a lot of pics in there that might give you some ideas.... maybe something layered and stacked in the back for volume?

I did go to the salon last week and got fixed up. I ended up with long layers (like before

) and a little angling that starts at about chin level. The style is probably much more versatile than I give it credit for. I know my stylist guy knows I'm very low-maintenance (meaning I don't like to have to fuss with my hair a lot), but I always want the option to mess with it, if I'm in the mood. This way, I can still put it up in a ponytail for workouts or simply scruch it with a blowdryer if I'm in a hurry.

Glad you like it!!

It's always better to go with a hairstyle that you will be able to live with. Sometimes people see styles and they get their hair cut... then realize they don't have the time to recreate it everyday... and they can't really do much else with it --- so It seems like an everyday 'bad hair day'. You gotta do what works for YOU --- and it sounds like you did just that.. CONGRATS!
