I have a stupid question for all of you. Whenever I go to get my hair cut i always show them a picture of what I want. And I have done that forever. But can you just go in and be like"ok what will look good on me?"?

I would do that only if you really, really trust your hairdresser :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I had a very bad experience the last time I did that .... she cut it so short, with my square face and glasses I ended up looking like a boy, and everyone agreed with me too so it wasn't just in my head! :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Now my hair is back to shoulder length so I am happy :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

yeah,.... I agree with the girls. You should always have at least SOME idea of what you want if you don't have a specific picture in mind. Your idea of "You" and your stylist's idea might be WAAAAY off. And that can lead to problems. Even if you go in and say "do whatever" and you like the result, if you don't have the time to do it everyday or if it doesn't fit in with your lifestyle, you could end up hating it. It's always best to get a consultation or at least be extremely clear in what you want done. That way there are no surprises. You can always ask for opinions on new things though. :icon_wink

This last time I did just that. And it was with a new stylist I'd never even been to this salon before. But it was the owner who cut my hair and I was totally tired of the style, or lack there of, that I had. She asked me, what my experiences were in the past, what worked, what didn't. What my length limitations were. ends, layers, bangs. And what three adjectives that best describe how I want to look and feel. Sexy, sleek, funky, what ever.

And then she went to town! It was like Edward Scissorhands. lol! I have naturally curly hair and she cut it dry. Most places don't. It's important because the stylist can see how your hair curls. When wet it's all pulled straight and you can't see the curl. Right then I knew she knew what she was doing.

I have never been so happy with a cut in my life! I get complements all the time. :clap

I guess I just went with my gut feeling. It was her salon and she was not cheap. And I figured, what the hell, if I hate it, it will grow back. I'm very glad I did it! :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

That's great Karrie! Those are all the things a GOOD stylist should ask if you are just going to "wing" a cut on someone. And cutting curly hair dry is good... you just want to make sure they know what they're doing... which your stylist apparenlty did... Enjoy it! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

good idea, im gonna tell them to cut mine dry when i go in on wednesday to fix the mess.. :icon_roll

Thanks! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Sorry to keep those with questions waiting.... been out of the house more, and not spending as much time at the pc... but I'm still here :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Just make sure they know what they're doing though Candy.... although a dry cut is good for curly hair - if the stylist isn't good at it, cutting it dry could be iffy. :icon_conf

I got another small Question.... I have weak curls/waves in my hair and i normally flat iron it. Should i go to my appointment without using my flat iron that day? lol cause when i do this one stylist who i don't go to any more looked like she had some trouble getting my hair straight cause she thought that was how it was naturally i guess, it was kinda funny cause she looked pained and stressed!:icon_roll

I think you shoudl have your hair in its natural state that way when your hairdresser cuts it, she know the exact texture of it too.

Exactly. It's best if they get to know your hair the way it is naturally... at least until you've been going to someone awhile & they know how to cut it regardless how you wear it that day. ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I would have a heart attack if the girl that cut my hair quit doing hair. I think I was 11 when I started going to her, so she knows my hair, although sometimes I change it somewhat. When she went on maternity leave I frantically grabbed the last appt. She cut her clients in half so she could stay at home with her kids but luckily she kept me. She cuts hair in her house, its kind of cool, she got tired of working at a salon. I have taken pictures from magazines before if I wanted to change the look, but at least reasonable, something that would look kind of like my hair.

I know the feeling.... thats why I'm glad my stylist is also my best friend ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I know she's not going anywhere ... and if she does... I know where she lives! ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> lol (We went to Beauty school together) but yes, you should always know your hair when selecting photos & styles... - as a sign in my friends salon says (and couldn't be truer!) "Miracles occur in Heaven... NOT in the stylist's chair!" LOL :icon_chee

There is a salon in New York called Devachen that specializes in curly hair cuts. They cut your hair dry. I have never gone there but there are a lot of great reveiws on the naturallycurly website. Dry cuts are good for curly hair, if you always wear your hair curly. If you occasionally straighten it, I have heard it looks uneven.

Sure! If you have a stylist that you've been going to for years, that you trust, then I don't see why not. :icon_smil

I have done that many times. You have to give a very detailed description of what you want.
