Okay...so I'm sick of being pasty winter white. On Wednesday I decided to go tanning and got a one week package. I went in the lowest bed for 10 minutes, and my chest and neck got a little burned. So I didn't go yesterday and went again today. I told the girl working there that I was a little pink the last time, so she suggested I upgrade to another type of bed that only has one type of rays (UVA I think). Since the max time in that one was 12, she said 5 minutes would be comparable to the 10 in the other one. Yeah...well it's about 2 hours later now and I'm CRISPY! I look like a damn lobster. Grrrrr...now I'm not going to be able to go again probably before my stupid week is up and I'm going to have to start all over again!

I would actually recommend getting Mystic Tan. Do you have that nearby where you live? I get that, and it looks like a real tan, no streaks, even color, and no orange.

Everytime you burn like that in the tanning beds, it will hasten your aging process, and you are way too young for wrinkles yet. I am brown skinned myself, but I am scared of trusting my tanning process soley to UVA/UVB rays...

:iagree: Your tan wont look hot if you're all wrinkly , go for a spray tan instead.

I agree about not using tanning beds. I have never used Mystic tan (not sure we even have them here), but there are alot of decent self tanners out there now too that don't make you streaky or orange. Honestly, I used to love tanning beds. I like the light and heat in the winter and having color all year round. BUT (and there is always a but), it really IS totally bad for your skin. From your avatar you look fair like me and for pasty girls like us it's even worse! I've had to have several moles removed that didn't look right. Luckily, none of them had turned cancerous. Anyhoo...my point is... there are ways to have color without going to beds.

What a bummer. I wonder if that was her intention all along just to make you burn and cheat you out of your tanning time. Probably not, but I'm always a suspicious person. hehe... :vogel:

I've heard that tanning beds are every bit as dangerous as the sun. I just tried Mstic Tan for the first time last weekend and I love it--the color without all the damage!

I know how bad tanning is. I don't usually burn though. Don't know what my deal is though. I don't think I actually burned today though, cause all the pinkness is gone now. I've used Mystic Tan a bunch of times, and honestly I don't like it that much. It's expensive, it doesn't last long at all, I hate when it starts coming off (and it always does so in weird places), and it does not look like a natural tan at all. I can always tell when people are sprayed or use self-tanners (which I also suck at using). I'm probably going to go again on Saturday, but in the regular bed.

Um, she's a moron! When you first go to the tanning bed, especially if you've never been or you're really pale, you only lay 5-7 minutes the first time! Even only 2 minutes for some! As silly as it sounds, but I've seen people come out of beds after only 5 minutes burned!

When you went back, she should've suggested laying for less time or a lower wattage bed! Not a higher one for more time! I recommend waiting at least two days before going back, and then laying for only about 7 mins. in the lowest heat bed they have. Hell, as dark as I am naturally, even I've almost burned in a bed, and I can lay the max (20-25 mins. in some places) on my first visit!

Take it slow. You know your skin better than anyone. Sometimes girls are jealous and will mess you up just for the heck of it.

Excellent advice Aquilah!

I would also like to recommend not tanning if your even the slightest bit pink from your last visit. Always wear protective eye wear (goggles, sun globes, wink-ease,etc). Be sure to use use lotion as well. Salons sell high quality lotion, but you can also purchase decent (not fantastic) lotion at places like Wal-Mart. Remember that mineral oil is a huge no-no as far as using it prior to tanning. I also recommend being skin typed for tanning. Most salons will skin type you on your first visit, but not all of them do. If you have any questions feel free to pm me. I used to work at a tanning salon. I no longer tan though for a variety of reasons.

She obviously didn't give you good advise... what a moron! I know how bad it is to tan there, but I still love it... I live in Florida and I am SOOOO sick of the beaches and laying out.. Going to a tanning bed is quick and easy... I just have to bring myself to start using the self tanners... I heard the Dove glow is good? If I'm not mistaking... that's what I heard.

I agree with Aquilah, that chick sounds like a moron! I don't tan but even I would know not to go in a higher wattage bed for more time. Hope it all works out for you!

I'm sorry, I need to jump in. I'm almost 47 and I used to use a tanning bed and booth. I've tanned most of my life, until I hit about 40 and realize the hyperpigmentation on my face and arms and other problems I was fighting was probably caused by tanning at a salon. Now, if i'm out in the sun more than 2 days in a row, I get terrible bumps/patches on my arms that itch like hives but aren't hives. Almost like skin poisoning. You will do what you want/need to do, but please heed my warning and take it slow, all you gals.

I miss laying out in Chicago's short summer season but I'm afraid of further damage. I'm currently trying to use products to combat the dark shadows on my face that look like my face is dirty.

I suggest learning to love pale skin. Think Nicole Kidman, she looks fabulous and doesn't need to frizzle her skin. I would totally complain to the salon though for giving such dangerous advice and getting you burned.

Update: I do actually think the girl knew what she was talking about. Any pinkness I got that day was gone in a couple hours - don't really think it was sunburn. I also looked more brownish afterwards. Yesterday I went back there and wanted to go in the same bed again, but there was someone just in it, so I decided to go in the weaker bed again - yeah, got pink again, which lasted all day yesterday. It's gone but tomorrow I'm definitely going in that other bed that she recommended. It didn't burn me and it started to make me brown.

Even if you're not burning - you're still speeding up the aging process, and increasing your chance of skin cancer. Is being less pasty really worth it?

I think it's okay to deal with natural skin in the winter. But I wouldn't know much about it bc my skins tan all year round.
