I have a lot of split ends, and am going to get my hair cut soon. I know the only way to get rid of them is to cut the hair, but are there ways to avoid getting them? Thanks.

heat styling stuff like curling irons, blow dryers, and flat irons cause damage. so i let my hair air dry during the night and use a heat protectant product when i do my hair. and i think sun does too... not sure...?

pay special attention to your ends when you condition. and use a blowdryer as less as possible. thats what i do. last time i had a cut was about ... 5 months ago or so. i still see no signs of split ends. oh boy. i'm going to get cut in the throat for not trimming my hair! haha. but, it looks healthy.

Yup! all good advice! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Stay away from flat irons, scorching it with a dryer, and other heat. You can use a sunsceen protectant for hair when you're out in the sun (Keune makes a good line for that) and just be gentle with it. Shampoo your scalp, and let the water run it through to the ends...and use a good conditioner on them ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Great question and great answers. I have a ton. I rarely dry my hair with a blowdryer. Does wear your hair up in a ponytail cause splitting? If I let my hair air dry I have to straighten it b/c it's recently decided to "be wavy".

I also heard rinsing you hair in cold water after you wash it, seals the cuticles therefore making it harder for blow dryers etc.. to cause split ends. Is this true Janelle? I rinse my hair in cold water ever since i was told that a few years ago and people always comment on how great it looks!

I agree with the other posters. Good advice!

I can't go without blowdrying my hair though, oh well.

Thanks for the replies! I have to wear my hair up a lot because I'm a dancer, so I think that causes me to brush it too much, damaging the ends, and simply because of the frequency that I wear it up, it's damaged a bit around where the band is. I have really long hair too, so I'm sure the weight doesn't help. : /

oh. and its healthier to comb through your hair with clean fingers instead of a brush all the time. i brush my hair when i wake up and before i take a shower. thats it.

I heard that too. I also heard that if you put a bit of vaseline at the ends of your hair, it helps prevent split ends.

The cool water trick helps... it helps add shine too. The hot water opens up the pores on your scalp & the cuticle of the hair, and a final rinse with cool water seals the cuticle... leaving your hair shinier. Honestly, I'm not too sure how well this works in keeping away split ends though... it helps, but you still need to be gentle with it, and go easy with the heat. ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Also, make sure you're using a fabric covered band. Regular elastics can snag, causing breakage. And since you mentioned you have breakage near the band... you might want to see what kind you're using.
