Hello all,

Just after some advice and ideas on split ends...

* How can we reduce split ends?

*How do you take care of your split ends?

*Should we just single out the split ends and trim those or get a full haircut?

I'm trying to grow my hair after years of extensions. The grown part is working well and the regrowth part is working well but the split ends is what is baffling me!

I've been using a leave-in treatment to see if it would help with split ends and I've seen a difference so far from when I didn't use any.  I use it when my hair is damp in the morning and also before I go to bed. I always make sure I braid or put my hair up in a bun, so my hair doesn't get too much friction or anything like that. I also use wayyy less heat in my hair.

I don't know much about hair, but that's what worked for me.  Oh and I did this after a fresh trim and haven't seen much breakage in my hair. yyayyyy

Thanks for all the great advice. I just find it so hard sometimes to keep on top of the ends. Just another question. Is it bad to wash your hair then braid it and go to bed? ( Doing this to avoid using heat to style) Does that pull the hair or make it more weak?

I used to get a lot of split ends when I was younger, until I tried using a brush with bristles spaced wide apart, and loads of conditioner. The 2 used together would untangle my hair without breaking it at all. This habit changed the way I treated my hair when it was wet and drastically reduced my split ends! In fact, I practically stopped getting them!

Braiding your hair at night is not a bad thing., In fact I have a friend whose entire family has long hair, even the kids. And one of the ways she prevents split ends with the kids is by braiding their hair at night so that it doesn't tangle and makes it easier to brush.

As for the ends, I say cut them off in one big trim and start new :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

You have just made me a happy girl! The news about braiding has definitely eased my mind about doing it. I went through and cut all my split end and the bottom now is much more smooth. Usually once they have gone I think I need to keep a regime to keep it healthy. The brush sounds like a great idea! Did you use a leave in conditioner after you washed your hair?

Identify whether you have split ends in your hair.
Always use hair shears if you are cutting your own hair, even if you are only cutting a strand.
Get your hair cut regularly, meaning every six to eight weeks.
Cut them yourself between haircuts using a pair of hair shears.
Don't rely on products that claim to "heal" split ends.

Are shears from, say, Walmart okay to use?

I have a bad habit of cutting off split ends when I feel stressed.
