Has anyone used Spironolactone? Did you have any side effects? How long have you used it? How long did it tak to work?

I have given it a lot..usually to people with Congestive Heart Failure, High blood pressure or liver disease...It can have some nasty side effects, such as nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, dehydration (cause it's also a diuretic) and even high potassium...(all these lead to major problems) I know there have been studies regarding acne and Hirsutism (excess hair)..but I am not sure that I would risk all the side effects..

May I ask what you are using Spironolactone for?

Spironolactone (brand name is Aldactone) is a diuretic. It acts by blocking aldosterone receptors in the kidney, causing the kidney to "dump" more sodium in the urine, and therefore increasing urine output as sodium carries water with it. It is used mainly in patients with congestive heart failure or cirrhosis (liver disease), sometimes for hypertension. The main side effect is hyperkalemia (high potassium in the blood), which can be a lethal complication, but quite infrequent if well monitored by your doctor. In men, it can also cause gynecomastia (increase in breast size), impotence, etc because it also blocks some testosterone receptors.

You should only use this medication if it is recommended by your physician. Electrolyte monitoring is essential while taking this medication.

Well I have Pulmonary Hypertension and I have been taking Spironolactone for about a year. My skin has changed considerably in the last two years since I was diagnosed and put on so many medications:

Bosentan (Tracleer)

Digoxin

Warfarin Sodium

Lasix

Spironolactone

Are you looking for specific side effects cause I've had tons but I'm not sure what medications cause each one since I'm on so many.

Marilyn
