Attending the spa is a real treat. When attending a spa you should be aware of some basic etiquette that will allow you to enjoy your visit and get the most out of the spa experience.

PREPARING FOR THE SPA

If there is a spa that you have never been to but are interested in, go in and ask if you can have a tour of their facilities and be told what services they offer. I personally like to start off with a manicure, pedicure of waxing and if I am happy with the service and facility then I graduate to a facial.

When booking your appointment try and have a little flexibility in your schedule as you may not get the date, time or therapist you want. You may need to book a couple of weeks in advance for popular times such as weekends and late afternoons.

If you have a medical condition such as pregnancy you’ll want to mention it when booking your appointment. Certain treatments may not be suitable for you. Let your therapist know at the time of your appointment if you have any medical concerns.

It is advised not to shave your legs right before receiving a body scrub treatment or leg wax.

DURING YOUR VISIT AT THE SPA

Just before you enter the spa turn off your cell phone. The spa is working very hard to provide a relaxing and stress-free environment for their clientele and a cell phone ringing will not enhance it. If you are with friends at the spa and wish to chat, keep your conversations to a low volume so not to disturb other visitors. No one wants to hear raucous laughing when they are having a full body massage.

Try and arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment. This will provide you with ample time to perhaps fill in a first time visitor questionnaire, change into a robe, sit and relax, perhaps have a drink, or go to the washroom. If you are late there is a very good chance that your treatment will be cut short do to back to back bookings.

Most spas have you undress for certain treatments –facials, massage, Vichy showers etc. It should never be required for you to be naked in front of anyone. You will change in a locker room, store your clothes and the spa will provide you with a delicious fluffy robe to wear, some slippers or sandals. You therapist will show you to your treatment room and then leave you so that you can disrobe and climb under the blanket or sheet on the table. If you are concerned or uncomfortable about this then call the spa in advance to find out their suggestions.

There are treatments that can be done with you being fully dressed, so you can always try those first. I would recommend not wearing your diamond earrings to the spa but if they go everywhere with you place them in a safe spot in your handbag and then lock them away in your locker. The spa will not be responsible for your jewellery going missing.

Shower before using a shared facility such as a pool or whirlpool. Take a towel into a sauna/steam room and use it to sit on and wear your plastic sandals provided by the spa.

Do let your therapist know if something is not working for you – temperature of the room, the music or if they are using too much or too little pressure during a massage.

They want to make your experience the best it can be so want to hear your feedback. If you are ever not satisfied with your treatment, make sure you make yourself heard – whether it be with the therapist or with the spa owner or manager.

Like going to a restaurant or a hairdresser, you should tip your therapist after your service. 15 to 20% is customary and can be left with the receptionist when paying. If you are really pleased with you service, then show it!

When canceling an appointment ensure that you give the spa the courtesy of notifying them as far in advance as possible. Most spas require a minimum of 24hrs notice but some will ask for 48hrs. Most day spas have cancellation policies that require either partial payment or full payment if not enough advance notice was given.
