Do you SMOKE? Here is some information that you may want to read ..and rethink that habit.

Smoking May Worsen Psoriasis

Heavy smokers may be putting their skin at risk.

A new study shows people who smoked more than a pack of cigarettes per day were twice as likely to have severe psoriasis as those who smoked 10 cigarettes or less per day.

Researchers say the results suggest that cigarette smoking may exacerbate existing psoriasis, and highlights the need for people with the skin condition to quit smoking. Smoking is a risk factor for many other diseases, such as lung cancer and heart disease, but little is known about its relationship to psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that is not contagious or life-threatening, but it causes itchy and sometimes embarrassing red, scaly patches on the skin. Psoriasis can also affect the nails and joints.

Smoking May Affect Skin

In the study, published in the Archives of Dermatology, researchers compared smoking history and severity of psoriasis in 818 adults with psoriasis.

The results showed that people who smoked heavily had twice the risk of severe psoriasis compared with light smokers.

In addition, an increasing number of cigarette-years (a measurement of both the intensity and duration of smoking) also raised the risk of severe psoriasis.

Researchers found that the effect of cigarette-years on psoriasis severity was stronger for women than for men. This means that present women smokers and recent quitters had a higher risk (72%) for worse psoriasis.

In an editorial that accompanies the study, Mark G. Lebwohl, MD, of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, says the study shows researchers still have a lot to learn about psoriasis. For example, the study does not answer whether psoriasis leads to smoking or smoking exacerbates psoriasis.

my friend smokes, and insists that she is going to age really well, but she is already showing signs of smoking - especially that loss of brightness you mentioned. she smokes like a chimney and can't stop. so sad when people are that addicted. i thank God i never started!

Nice thread!! I don't smoke, but my friend does and she has such smooth beautiful skin, doesn't even use powder, I am suprised that with smoking she has great skin, maybe genes play a role.

My mom smoked all of her life. She passed away 10 years ago because of lung cancer. I will never forget the time she came to pick me up from gymnastic practice. I introduced her to my friend. The next day my friend and I were talking about how old our mother's were. When I told her my mother's age, she said "I thought she was much older than that." Smoking really does age you. You might not see it at first but a lifetime of smoking really takes its toll.

oh i have proof for this. look at the picture, my dad is the guy on the left. he is 5 years older than the couple to the right. his friends. the guy is a smoker, the woman a second hand smoker.

Yet, another reason for me to quit smoking on the 1st. Wish me luck.:icon_eek:

I smoke and I've noticed some crepe skin around the lower part of my eye socket, I figure it's from smoking. My BFF is 2 years older and a smoker but she doesn't have it. Some people get away with smoking and have no adverse effects, most don't.

I'm 20, but I don't want those lines around my mouth and the premature wrinkling later on in life. That's ultimately why I stopped. They did make me feel better, though! :icon_smil

NO offense, but how old are they? Hopefully not younger than 65, b/c they (mainly she) look awful! My mom smoked for 20 years, and still looks 10-15 years younger than she is. :clap I didn't want to take chances, though.

Hello, I'm very new here and I wanted to give my 2 cents. I totally agree with the general sentiment. My grandmother looks great for her age but she use to smoke. Luckily she quit over 20 years ago but imagine how she'd look if she never started. She and my other relatives who use to smoke always warned me "Don't smoke, it is a sick and disgusting habit and they need to ban it from public places". Mintesa, your dad looks great but that couple next to him looks so much older than him. Thanks for posting that pic. :icon_smil

hi, my dad is 60 (pssst its supposed to be his secret) and the couple is 55.

im happy your granny quit. :clap coz my uncles and my friend's granny both got their legs cut off because of smoking. so i am happy that my friend quit also because of what happened to her granny. and i agree that smoking in public should be banned, it affects the second hand smokers.

I am 5 months quit on January 11th which is my 150 days mark - yes I STILL keep track of the days. WAHOO!

And you know, as vain as this may sound, the real reason I quit is because of what it was doing to my skin and teeth (in regards to the teeth I am now whitening). Weird huh, forget the fact that I have slight asthma and allergies! What a great combo (smoking with asthma and allergies).

I just seen myself age faster than I ever seen in the last 5 years and blamed my smoking & stress. I smoked ALOT! And I liked it - YIKES! I am now almost 34 and I hope to TURN BACK or repair some signs.....and hoping to NEVER smoke again!

Great thread!!!!

Thanks for the remaining of how bad is smoking and all the bad stuff that can do to you, I know it all and keep smoking. I’m just a stupid stone head, what can I say ?

I made the same resolution, and bad for me it did not come true yet. I’ve stopped 2 times and always come back, I’m bad.

How are you doing tann ?? Good luck !!

I picked up the habit, but luckily it only lasted around 2 years:icon_roll

Addiction is a complex problem. nicotine is one of the hardest addictions to get over.

I wish anyone trying to kick the habit luck, and just know that there are significant benefits from quitting

i met my BF when he was in the process of quitting. he just took nicotine gums for a while. there were nicotine gums all over the place. then he switched to normal gum. and everytime i went through the rooms i had to threw the nicotine gums i would find around. this worked for him. maybe you could try it.

Oh I tried that for over a week, it only made me want to smoke more plus my bf smoke too and the smell drive me crazy. But thank you mintesa I'm gona have to find another way or another bf ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />. . . in my dreams

I used to smoke a bit some years ago, but I quit because I was thinking a lot of the aging thing!I And I hated to sit in a room with smokers!Only outside!

Good riddens!!

i really hope my bf can quit smoking.. i really scare and worry abt his health even though he just started not long ago.. i guess nothing but his own determination can make him stop smoking now.. sigh.........:icon_surp
