My face is oily/dry/acne prone (actually, I have acne). In other words, the worst type of skin. I use Proactiv Extra-Strength formula system, and even that does not control my acne. I have recently used olive oil on my face---I do cleanser, olive oil, lotion--I skip the toner. I rinse the olive oil off using lukewarm water. This seems to make it a bit better--but my mother thinks olive oil will clog my pores, even though olive oil is working much better than Proactiv ever did. Moisturizers never work--concealers/foundations just slide right off any pimples and don't conceal them--and I have enlarged pores/or little white spots on the side of my nose. What can I do?

I have the same skin type as you! I used Proactiv system in 2006 for 4 months or so and it didn't work for me either. I remember it made my forehead feel like a plastic surface with bumps. When I stopped using it, I started getting horrible painful cysts all over my face and neck! I only had mild acne before. ugh

Proactiv's ingredient is benzoyl peroxide which might irritate and dry your skin even more. The cleanser has tiny beads which also irritates acne. I know it works for some people but seeing you have same crazy skin type as me, I suggest you stop using it and look for something more gentle. I don't know how severe your acne is so I can't suggest anything really. But I really think you should run away from proactive.

My mom is convinced Proactiv is the best solution and says if I keep using it, it will get better. She says I can't believe the internet---do you have any good resources to say that olive oil is good?

also, Proactiv extra strength is really the only thing that keeps my acne at bay--any other medication does nothing. So I'm saying, Proactiv is better than nothing, but certainly not very good.

I don't use toner only because I have recently been using olive oil.

I use the Queen Helene Mint Julep facial masque and a 20% Salicylic Acid chemical peel a couple times a month (just began that regimen recently). That helped my skin a lot. I use lemon juice under my makeup (or lack thereof, as my acne is more under control now), and I occasionally use sugar and honey as a scrub. My cleanser is just a cheap Clean & Clear one. My skin has very much improved. My blackheads have shrunken or are gone, and my acne has cleared up... I'd say... 75%. I also notice that if I eat very well one day (mostly fruits, whole grains and vegetables), my skin looks really nice the morning after. They say diet doesn't affect acne, but lowering dairy intake usually helps.

By the way, olive oil does not clog pores, but I would suggest using a lighter oil or a facial lotion, something like Benefit Triple Performing Facial Emulsion.
