Hi

I'm a 17 year old male with oily skin and I need some help with my face. I currently just wash my face with cetaphil and it seems like its somewhat improving. But the problem is I have a bunch of milia under my eyes and cheeks, a couple of atrophic and discoloration acne scars, not that many pimples around my face, and blackheads on my nose. I want to go to a dermatologist, but my mom doesn't want to take me because she thinks it's gonna be too expensive and make my skin worse. I don't know what to do. Is there any over the counter treatment for what I have? Should I go to one of those spa places that give you facials? I'd be kind of embarrassed to walk in there though. Am I too little to go there, and do any males go there?

Please help.

Thanks in advance!

Have you considered laser resurfacing? But I guess you're too young to undergo such a procedure, plus you would require your parents' permission. Try an oil-free moisturizer. I would suggest clean n clear or neutrogena acne clearing products available out there.

yes, you can walk in a spa, i don't see why there should be a problem. i recommend you browse the links Kathy posted, there's great tips you might useful. keep your face (and hands) clean, wear sunscreen, it really helps. if really nothing seems to improve your state, consulting a derm might be necessary.

I forgot to mention that I do use an oil free sunscreen. The problem isn't really the pimples, it's the milia and the acne scars. I also got enlarged pores on and around my nose. I also have a bunch of skin colored bumps all over my face. Is there anywhere that doesn't require a parent's permission?

Retin A will help with the milia - plus they will clear up on their own.

In Canada, a family doctor can prescibe Retin A. Probably the same in the US.

Why not have a visit with your family doctor. They can give you a good skin care regime. Then decide if a dermatologist is necessary.

Carolyn is right. a family doctor, a generalist, can prescribe meds for acne, maybe start there.

My mom doesn't think my skin is bad enough to go to any kind of doctor. She says leave it and everything will go away. I have had the milia for around 2 years. My skin looks pretty good from far away, but if you close up you can see how bad it is. Anything over the counter for milia and the scars? Would those doctors in those pharmacies help? Like CVS and stuff.
