I am pretty pale especially in pictures.  I don't look pale much until you take my picture then I look ghostly white.  I used to fake-n-bake and would love the tan I would get from that.  Well Im kinda broke and don't really want to burn.  I just bought Jergens Natural Glow for Fair to medium skin tones for the body and face.

I know you need to exfoliate, but no idea how to do that.  Is that just washing your skin?  I take a shower at night and use a puff ball, is that enough?  I plan on putting the lotion on at night as I have enough at night to walk around without clothes before bed.  I wanted to try lotion self tanners first before I delve into the really expensive ones.  I use lotion all the time but don't think one with self tanner would replace my lotion.

Any tips?  Thanks!

Amy

Ditch the puff ball those only make lather... not a great source of exfoliation.

How to Fake the Bake...
Tip: How to Fake a Bake How to Get the Best Self Tan
  • Buff - Loofah gloves are the best and super cheap. ($1 a pair at most stores) Lather up with a nice cleansing gel and buff away dead, dry skin.  I like a cleanser with a little AHA's in them like Sonya Dakar's Daily wash in CARA CARA or Jan Marini BioGlycolic Body Wash with Glycolic Acid.
  • Prime the skin with a light moisturizer, paying extra attention to the knees, elbows, back of arms, and achilles.  Allow it to set in for about 10 minutes before moving on to step 3.
  • Tint... now you're ready to start adding the color.  Use GLOVES! Apply in circular motions to keep coverage even.  To reach your back put lotion on a 3 foot strip of plastic wrap and sweep back and forth like a towel.  Apply the lotion evenly on the the plastic wrap to get even coverage.
  • Start with a light tint and work up to a darker look. Layers are key!
  • Don't forget to keep your skin moisturized to keep the look fresh longer and re-apply weekly.
  • And don't leave off the SPF just because the sun is not out or because you are "tanner". The more damaging UVAI rays may not be responsible for burns but are the cause of wrinkles, premature skin aging, DNA damage and skin cancer! Yikes!

Just washing your skin can only remove the dirt from your face but if you exfoliate your skin then it will remove the layer of dead skin cells from your skin. In order to exfoliate your skin, you can either buy an exfoliating soap from a nearby chemist shop or you can prepare your own sugar spa body scrub with 1 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup oil. Prepare the mixture and apply it on your skin and massage in a circular motion and rinse well.

Before sunless tanning I like to use a body sugar scrub. I like to use one by a company called Tree Hut. Then I shave. Out of the shower I use a light lotion.

If I am getting a spray tan I  call it good at this point and will head off to be tanned several hours later (no makeup, no anything! It's good to prep the night before, then roll out of bed and go to the salon). If I'm using a self-tanner at home I just coat myself with it, let myself dry, and then dust on some baby powder (which seems to help not make everything I own orange). I use self-tanner at night before bed.. but not with light colored sheets!

Make sure you keep your skin hydrated! Dry skin is a no-no when it comes to having a nice fake tan.
