Okay I have oily hair on my scalp but dry hair at the bottom. It's damaged to say the least. Anyway, I have to wash my hair everyday to keep it from looking greasy. It's a real pain in the butt because I have to blow dry and straighten. So here's my question: I read somewhere that if you have oily hair, you can wash with Lemon Joy (the dishwashing soap) and then use a strong conditioner on the ends. Is that true? Would that be okay? Please help because I don't have a lot of money for any high end products right now.

Well you can, but it's really harsh. You'd be better off using a clarifying shampoo on your roots & scalp, and just let the water rinse the shampoo to your ends... (don't suds your ends like you normally would.. just 'wash' the top) and use a good hydrating conditioner on the ends only... stay away from the scalp w/ conditioner ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I've heard that if you have long hair, it's usually better to wash every other day so that the oils from your scalp have time to travel all the way to the ends. However, I know that's not always an option -- my hair also looks oily when I don't wash every day ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I don't know if this helps any, but maybe on days you're not going out (surely there are occasional weekend days you stay inside or something?) you could not wash it to let your natural oils condition your hair? Or just not wash it and put it up in a ponytail or bun -- if I don't wash my hair it still looks okay pulled back, it only looks greasy when it's down!

I have long hair and an oily scalp, too. The best shampoo I've found for drying out the roots is Sebastian Stark Naked, I know it's high end but I only use it once a month and I'm absolutely convinced that it controls the oil until the next month (it's super harsh), so even though it's pricey it lasts so long that it averages out. An easy way to help hydrate the rest of the hair is to put your hair in a ponytail, then put Aussie 3-minute miracle on your hair and put it in a Ziploc Bag (so it kind of looks like a deranged hair net) and leave it on while you do household chores (you probably don't want to go outside with your hair in a baggie) and then rinse it out.
