Dear Ladies,

I need your help! I have very long and heavy hair and what I am failing to achieve is an ideal ponytail. Is there a special technique for that, or it is just my hair? Whatever I use to keep my ponytail in place does not help. Within half an hour it starts loosing its shape and slides down:icon_roll (I hope I managed to explain the problem???). Any ideas?

Thanks a million.

My hair is EXACTLY like yours. If I try to put it in a higher ponytail, it is sliding out and making that weird pouf below the ponytail. Ew. I got my hair thinned out by my hairstylist, it really helps, and my hair doesn't look thinner, it is just lighter and easier to manage. She does mine with thinning shears, and alternates layers and leaves the top layer pretty much alone so my hair still looks smooth, and doesn't have tweakies everywhere. I use thick, metal-less wrapped elastics, and they work well for me, since 3 wraps around my hair is really snug. You don't want to get really stretchy thin ones, since they won't hold your hair as tight.

I have also seen those hair elastics with the bits of rubber sticking out so as to grip your hair better, but I haven't tried them yet. I am scared of them pulling out my hair when I take it out or if it gets tangly.

hope I helped a little :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Hi Anne! Thank you very much for your advice. I am a bit reluctant to thin my hair out, but if that is the only answer to my problem I might consider it.

You're welcome!

Oh I was so scared the first time I did it! I was afraid that my hair would look stringy or icky, but it turned out great! No one could even tell that I had done it, but my head felt a lot lighter, and it took a lot less time to blowdry and shampoo it.

Make sure you go to someone that you know is capable of doing it, and be sure to tell them you just want some of the weight or bulk taken out, not superthinned. You can ask to watch with a mirror too, so you can see what they're doing!

What are you using to pull it back? A covered band, or a scrunchie? You might want to look for a small fabric covered elastic band. And wrap it around a few times until it feels tight, then just mist with a little hairspray. If you want the look of a scrunchie, do the elastic first, then wrap the scruchie around it. HTH! :icon_wink

try putting like 2 or 3 elastics in your hair so it holds better. the hair thinning thing is a good idea too, it usually makes thick hair look less puffy and more easy to manage, wash & dry etc.

Thank you, ladies! I am using an elastic band, but never thought of using 2-3 at once:icon_love . Will give it a try.

Once again, thank you for your help!

1. Start with day-old hair. Don't wash your hair the day you wear a pony. Your hair's natural oils will help the ponytail hold better.2. Keep conditioning. Even if you don't suds up, use conditioner on ends to make them shiny.

3. Blow dry for volume. Begin with towel-dried hair. Spritz a volumizer onto the roots, and use a paddle brush to pull hair directly up from the scalp while you dry.

4. Add a little paste. Run a tiny amount of styling paste or pomade through your hair for texture and added hold.

5. Go low. For sleek style, go with a low pony.

6. Or, go high. For energy and bounce (and a great weekend look), go with a high pony positioned at the crown of your head.

7. Brush into place. Use a wide paddle brush to sweep hair back. Gather the ponytail in your hand and secure with a covered elastic band.

8. Add accessories after you secure. That way, you can arrange the accessories -- a scarf, ornate pony holder, or a pony wrap -- without compromising your hairstyle.

9. Back-comb for volume. If you choose a high pony, lift the top of the tail and use a fine-tooth comb to tease the tail at its base. Flip the top section back down and smooth over with a brush.

10. Load on shine. Give your ponytail a finishing touch with a few squirts of shine serum. Add a shot of hairspray to keep any flyaways in place.
