I got these huge red bumps of pimples on both my cheeks. They were really painful (so painful that if my hand touched my face accidentally while sleeping, i would wake up from the pain). The next day, these pimples became really itchy, and I tried to keep my hands off my face as much as I could.

My question: How are these red, painful, itchy pimples different from the painless little ones? Is the bacteria underneath the pimples different? Does anyone know the science behind it?

I started taking birth control pills a few days ago, and I am wondering if that is causing this breakout. Anyone with any kind of info on this, please share!

i think there are different types of acne, and we can get them at various times in our lives. try not to poke and prod if u can so you don't scar your skin. I'd ride it out for a month, see if your skin calms down. If the pimples are recurring I'd seek help from your physician to see if it is the birth control, maybe he/she can switch the prescription or give you some acne meds.

I always thought birth control helped to clear up the skin. Is anything else different, I mean r u using any different facial cleansers or creams, or are you out in the sun a lot maybe sweating more?

Birth control can clear up skin but it does take awhile to start working. Have you changed any of your beauty products around here lately, different laundry detergent, etc? That and check the consumer information from your bcp's to check for side effects. I'm not a medical expert but this is what I would do if I were in your shoes. Good luck!

Does anyone know how long it takes for birth control to have effect on the skin?

Nothing else about my routine has changed. But the weather where I live is horrible...it goes up to 110 on some days! Wonder if it could be that...

This is making me feel horrible!

It can be hormonal or allergic to either the pill, a food allergy, a detergent, ...

If nothing else has changed I would call the doctor.

I couldn't reply to your PM since I only have 20 posts. The birth control prescribed to me is called Ortho Tricyclen Lo. The doc said that it was low in hormones, and it would help with my skin problem.

Do you know how long it takes before i start seeing any effect from the pills? I have been taking them for a week now.

oh yes! totally start drinking water asap! i bet you'll see a difference in your skin within a week! you need to sign up for the 8 a day water challenge right now! you skin is probably so dehydrated that it's having it's own personal breakdown! start with the water and see what improvements you make before you start spending cash for more products! remember to post again with your results! good luck!

I'm on tricyclen lo too and I don't think it helps clear up the skin. I don't have any problems with my skin now but I used to and at that time, I was on Tricyclen (regular) and it really helped. Tricyclen (not lo) is actually the only birth control pill clinically proven to reduce mild to moderate acne. You should try it next month, i had very good results with it! Good luck

Sometimes I get the cystic ones (the ones right under your skin that won't come up) - I put "DDF Sulfer Mask" on them at night until they go down. The sulfer really dries them up.

I have had large, very painful acne before, but they have never been itchy...

As for the pill, it takes about 6 months before it starts to clear up your acne. And it doesn't always work -- sometimes it does actually cause acne. There are so many different pills, and everyone reacts in different ways, so what works for one person may not work for the next!

If this continues I would talk to your doctor, especially if you have never experienced acne like this before. (Assuming it really is acne...)

I would drink the water, if your not used to it try it in a glass and make it cold. I hated water but this is the best way to taste it.

The one you are on usually clears up acne pretty fast and is a low hormone one but your body may already be estrogen dominate which can cause you to break out.

Are you on the pill for protection or to help with other issues? Also how old are you?

I use Acne-Free, a pimple terminator gel that really works well on me. You can find it at Target.
