Recently received a sample of this from a swapper. I tried it today after my shower and it had an unpleasant smell. It didn't really smell rancid or spoiled, but unpleasant.

Is that comment or do you think something was wrong?

I've used the hope in a jar a few times and it doesn't really have an unpleasant smell to me. It is hard to describe. It is a fragrance free product--nothing added to give a certain scent. It may just be the chemicals u are smelling.

I use Hope in a Jar daily and a BUNCH of philosophy products and LOVE them all. All I can say about hope in a jar is LOVE IT! IF the person gave you a FRESH SAMPLE of the FACE CREAM it should be pure white with no scent and when you go to use it, it should start to almost liquify on your fingers before you apply it to your face. They advertise it as a drink of water for your skin and it truly is. It should absorb without a greasy residue and leave no film, just soft, moist skin. The hope in a jar for the eyes and lips is a cream with a thicker feel and more body to it AND it is a creamy pale beige color. It comes in a very small jar, like most eye creams. It sounds like either what you got was not fresh and was contaminated some how or was not the hope in a jar face cream.

The Purity cleanser is a creamy ivory and smells like lavender and other natural essences, but not a bad smell, more like aromatherapy. Maybe it was the cleanser? It sounds to me like something wasn't right. That is too bad because it is a wonderful product. If you have a Sephora store near you or some Nordstroms carry it you can try it there. If you think you might like to try some products go online to QVC.com and see if they have a "discovery" kit of small sizes of a few products that include the cream. That way if you don't fall in love (like most of us do!) you can return it. I feel bad

that you had that experience. Us Philosophy sisters have to make sure that you get a good impression of the product because we know you will love it and be hooked like we are once you have a good experience with it. I love it SO much I just bought the cleanser in a 32oz. pump bottle! Now THAT'S love!:icon_love I am going to check and see if I still have my sample packet from when I bought my cleanser. Check back with me to see if I do or if someone "lifted" it from my bathroom drawer

I think Trisha uses it regularly too (although i may be wrong) so hopefully she'll have an opinion for you too..

I swapped my NARS duo for it a few months back but the b*tch swaplifted me so i never got to try it

i use it a love it too! the smell is definitely unique but i don't find it bad at all. it could be that you just don't agree with the smell... it doesn't necessarily mean it is spoiled [but who knows]. i use purity made simple alsooo & i always find myself coming back to these 2 products when i stray & get skin-selfish
