Hey everyone,

I'm new to this website...obviously lols. But I needed some advice or possibly help from personal experiences about Permanently Straightening Hair. You see I could put the effort forth every single morning for the rest of my life into taking 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours straightening it. Or I could just get this procedure done. To start off I have wavy hair. Not curly, yet not straight. It sometimes gets almost curly but not quite ringlets. I prefer it straight but it's getting harder and harder is I keep having to do it every morning for so much time. This seems like the answer to all my problems. Except for, I have never dyed nor permed/perm. straightened my hair. So no damage has been done to it other than the regular straightening. So I wouldn't want to ruin my hair when it is still in great condition. I was hoping for some personal experience and maybe some pros and cons sort of thing. Just to help me decided whether to do this or not.

Thank you so much, Julia

i had it done, it only made my waves not as wavy.

they tried it 2x on me and both didnt work (so of course i got my money back).

my hairdresser now (who i love and is awsome) told me the truth that its pretty much a realxer and that nothing is really gonna make it like the straight i want it (i asked about getting done again and this is what she told me).

Retro-violet is right. It will only make your hair's pattern more stretched out, but it will still retain the pattern, meaning you will still have to work to get it stick straight, or even relatively straight, plus have to maintain your hair now that it has been damaged by chemicals. The only way to get it stick straight would be to risk your hair's elasticity and strength with a super-strong relaxer, which is only recommended when hair is short, and it doesn't sound like yours is. Try and tough it out, because once you apply a chemical like that, you can never go back to the way your hair was unless you cut it out, and than you have to grow it out all over again! (I speak from experience). Even when you are back to "virgin" hair after you cut the relaxer out, for some reason, the hair never grows back the same way twice... I reccomend trying to work with what you have and using products to enhance and beautify your natural waves. You may still want to straighten your hair from time to time even so, but the more beautiful your natural hair is because you put the effort into it, the less you will think about altering it.

I've had it done before and it was absolutely awesome.

Just to let you know, I already had pretty straight hair, it just had some waves and kinks in there... but straightening it chemically make it so much straighter, easier to manage, and believe it or not, it was actually pretty healthy after as well.

i think u really need to make sure you go somewhere good to get it done.

Retro I think you're talking about a texturizer.A texturizer only loosens the curl pattern. A relaxer can get your hair bone straight , depending on the strength of the product and processing time.

Keep in mind though , that the stronger the products the more damaging it is if used incorrectly. I am multri racial and I relax my hair every once in a while. The only time I wasnt happy with the results was after getting it done in a white salon. I'd say go to a white salon for a consultation , and then a black salon for a consultation. See which you feel more comfortable with.

That being said, you would most probably still need to use a blowdryer/straightner if you want a styled polished look. Except instead of hours it'll take 15 min.

HTH

I would try it, if you have healthy virgin hair you aren't taking as much of a risk as someone who had chemically treated hair, especially if it takes you hours to straighten it.

I've done countless horribly cruel things to my hair including getting it relaxed and I found that to be the least damaging process.

I've always wanted to get it done.. but I color my hair alot so... wouldn't be the best idea ever.

my mom wants me to get it done because I never wear my hair curly and it would be a lot easier for me on my part, but I heard that your hair falls out and such

itsjilian ANYTHING when used wrong can make your hair fall out . Bad color job , bad shampoo etc so I wouldnt worry if your hair is in good condition and you follow instructions.

i don't know, have you heard of rebonding? i did it, and it made my hair super straight..it stays for about as long as till new hair grows and then you have to rebond just your new hair from the top. it doesn't damage your hair, makes it super straight, silky and shiny! u can even colour, but after 3 months after having your hair rebonded.

*New here but I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in lol*

I've been getting relaxers since about 12yrs old and the truth about them is that they only relax the hair that you can see.... Meaning - since you're hair is always growing, it'd be impossible for your hair to be straight for good because your roots will grow in natural (curly/wavy/etc.). You will always need to touch up your roots just like you would with adding color to your hair.

I have heard of some technique that is not a relaxer but claims to be permanent and is said to take like 6-8 hours. But unfortunately I don't know anything about it and I doubt that its effective. Plus, I hear its super expensive. A regular relaxer at a black/hispanic salon would go for around $40-$60. For this new procedure we're talking hundreds for an unknown and probably non-permanent outcome.

Bottom line, you'll always have to be straightening your hair...even if its just the roots as long as your hair grows. The best thing to do is try to find products that help ease the transition from curly/wavy to straight. I use a few Ojon products which help me a lot. You'll just have to see whats best for you. Its the price we pay for being blessed with frizzy, unruly, coarse, thick, curly/wavy hair. >.<

I was in Vietnam visiting my relatives with my dad and brother. It was SUPER hot and humid and totally crazy. It rained everyday stinkin' day. So I had my hair tied up as always and couldn't straighten it because my neck would sweat and I'd get super mad and my hair gets all poofy and frizzy. So my cousin took me to my uncle sister's work [which is also her house] and she did my hair. The process took 8 HOURS! My back hurt so much. I don't know how long it takes to get it done in the U.S but it's cost my friend $150. It lasts for at least 6 months. My friend and I just rather straighen our hair everyday. You must have long hair for it to take about 1 - 1 1/2 hours to straighten it. It used to take me that long bcuz I had really had long hair and a super bad straightener. Good thing I bought a new one or else I'd probaby still be doing my hair. >_<

My friends sister had this done on her very curly hair, it looked great and she had no problems.
