my friend matt has these really bad chap lips right now. i hung out iwth him yesterday and his lips started to bleed in some spots a few times. the guy is using chapstick like no tomorrow, but he told me it would get bad when he woke up even though he over-loads on the chapstick before bed.

so do you guys have any idea what i should tell him to do? cause i have no idea at all.

Aquaphor is a very good lip treatment but I don't know if it works if his lips bleed. But doesn't hurt to try. You can find it in many drugstores.

He could use vasoline, it's my secret weapon for almost everything! When ever I go camping the top of my lips get really red, irritated, flakey, dry....... but this fixes it all! And its cheap too!

I use cheap buck store lip balm, the waxier the better........put lots on before bed,in the morning your lips will be kinda goopy and I just rub my lips with my finger to exfoliate them and they are soft as a babies bum.also try changing toothpaste brands....... for me, colgate gives me very dry lips!!!

thank you guys so much for the tips. i gotta show him this thread so he can see some of his options.

I'd say aquaphor, or if they are seriously chapped, call a pharmacy and see if they have Dr. Dan's Cortibalm. It has cortisone, so it works really well, overnight most of the time for me. www.drdanslipbalm.com you can order online also.

Clinique's superbalm is also great, but it does look glossy, so I think he'd only want to use it at night. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I'm going to agree with the others. Simply try something like Vaseline, Rosebud Salve or Aquaphor. He might even check with the Pharmacist before choosing something.

I had the same problem before, but them I read that using vasaline over night helps a lot. SO tell him to use vasaline or petroleum jelly over nigth, and during day, use the non shiny lip balm. Tell him to exfoliate the lips from time to time...

Hi Retro,

This is a tip I received from one of my makeup artist mentors a few years back. Scoop out some vaseline and put in a small portable jar (size of a lipgloss/lip balm container). Take 2 Vitamin E gel caps, puncture a small hole, then squeeze the contents into the jar. Mix the vaseline and the vitamin E together. You now have a nice lip balm which can be applied often as needed. Hopefully your friend is drinking plenty of plain water (not seltzer or clear fruity types).

I've had bad chapping of the lips and around them because of my eczema. My dermatologist told me that most chap sticks are wazy, and are therefore actually counter-productive to healing chapping because they lock OUT moisture. So, it is important to put something moisturizing on before you use chapstick (which can also lock in the moisture if it's already there).

Vaseline always works great for me. Especially if the chapping is not just on the lips, but around it.

If his chapping is eczema related, I recommend also using an OTC hydrocortisone cream with added moisturizer overnight. That will help "buff up" the sensitive skin and make it less susceptible to damage. But make sure it's the moisturizing kind! Unmoisturized hydrocortisone cream made mine worse :eusa_wall:

That happened to me when I moved out to the Nevada desert. It can have something to do with dehydration - if he doesn't already, tell him to drink tons of water on top of the previous suggestions. That helped me.

welcome to MuT, unmuzzleme!

leza, that's a great tip. i'm gonna try that. thanks!

i definitely recommend vaseline and rosebud salve! i've never tried aquaphor.

if you can get a hold of an ointment called lucas pawpaw ointment that should help enormously

it moisturises and heals (its an aussie thing)
