I have been making my own Body Scrub with Salt, Sugar and Olive Oil. I freaking can't get enough of this stuff!!!!!! I have been scrubbing everyday and my body feels really smooth. My question: Is there such thing as over-exfoliation? I haven't had any side effects, but I was just curious??

On another note...I am just obsessed with Olive Oil period! I use at as my night cream now, I use it to deep condition my hair, I massaged it into my dogs paws to soften them....It's my cure-all!!

i think there is such thing as over exfoliation, i did it once, haven't done it again, my face just got a bad red rash thing and i knew i was over exfoliating because i did it too many times a week, i do believe olive oil is the cure all i love it too, and i use it on my face as well, i have never used it on my hair though but i want to try it too!

Here is some info I found:

Q. How Much Should I Exfoliate?

A. Women should exfoliate using a scrub once or twice a week. You want to be sure not to overexfoliate or use a product with granules that can tear at the skin (I'm thinking of those hard, rocklike exfoliators you can buy over the counter, avoid those at all costs). Rub the product in a circular motion for 30 seconds & then wash off. If you have oily skin, large pores or acne-prone skin, you can try an at-home microdermabrasion system.

I've over exfoliated my face before, but never my body.

Care to share your body scrub recipe?

Ive another wonderful homemade scrub! Was just about to post it found this recipe from my friend, believe me her skin is sooooo smooth. She told me its her mom's secret. Now this may involve few indian spices, bit smelly you know the herbs smell but trust me its really worth to give a try!

You can get these stuffs from any indian spices shop or supermarket

Okie here it is;

1 large scoop of green peas(the tiny ones)

1 large scoop of poppy seeds

1 half or quarter scoop of turmeric powder(dont over add this powder as it can cause yellow stains on ur nails)

Blend these items into powder form and no water added!!

Keep inside a container and add lil water or baby oil into a paste according to your desire and apply while in shower.Rinse throughly and you can see the immediate smoothness.

green peas and turmeric powder are knownin indian beauty secrets for centuries.

Too much exfoliation will cause your skin to dry out which will then cause an overproduction of sebum.

Just be careful on how often you use it. Do you have dry or oil skin normally?

Yes, you can over-exfoliate. There is a point where you are not rubbing off bad skin and where you are taking off good skin. I think you should only exfoliate twice a week. That is what a skincare professional told me at the beauty school I went to.

I want to know your body scrub recipe too! Also, how do you condition your hair with it? How much for how long, etc! I love olive oil too. I bought a little bottle in the pharmacy at Wal-Mart and I take it everywhere I go!

Yup you can definately exfoliate too much. Did that last week. Skin becomes sort of dry and a tad redish.

Having extremely sensitive, oily skin, I know that there is DEFINITELY such thing as over-exfoliation! Whenever I over do exfoliating, I end up with really red, irritated, bumpy, hot, hyper-sensitive, dry skin, even with my extremely gentle exfoliants!

short answer: yes.

whilst dead skin cells build up on the skin every day and need regular removal through exfoliation, the general rule is that our day's natural exfoliation is also working (ie. using a towel, wearing clothes, sleeping in our beds). depending on your skin condition and factors such as the environment we are in, come people need more exfoliation than others.

i say listen to your skin, if anything itches, tingle, reddens or bumps up, go a little easier. its like a shaving rash almost, go over the same bit too much and your skin reacts.

i've had a bad experience with olive oil on my face, but that might've been my own fault. i stopped using my regular cream (for dry skin) and the first day or two it was fine, i would wash my face and put olive oil on but after a few days my skin started breaking out and i had these red rashes on my face. so now im too scared to put it on overnight

P.S. how do u deep condition ur hair with that? :-/

oh dermatologists have said many times we shouldnt use sugar to exfoliate!! normal sugar we got from supemarket has irregular shape with too sharp edges tht can make your skin smooth but also produce alotta microtears that snot good for skin!!u might not see it but ur skin is definitely taking it !

i really need to start exfoliating... i want to try a homemade sugar recipe or something like that.
