I have always used Clairol Nice N Easy, medium golden brown. I color about every 2 months and I just wash it all in and leave it in for about 20minutes. I recently called Clairol to ask a question and they told me I should be using the root method by putting product first on roots, then "pulling" the color through the rest of the hair about the last 5 minutes. I did this once and had a difficult time doing this . It was too awkward , so the next time I colored, I just washed the product in again and ignored what the Clairol rep. said. I would like to know how the rest of you put the color on your hair and would appreciate any advise. thanks

I use the point of the bottle to part my hair all over and squeeze the color out just trying to do the roots only then I take my gloved hands and run them on my scalp to try and distribute the color. I usually miss some spots then get them the next time. Nice n Easy has a root touch up kit with a brush, but I found it hard to do and time consuming.

Nice to meet you Syrah! I'm Janelle from NY... hope you don't mind I moved this into the hair forum... (since it's a hair topic) but to answer your question...it really depends on what's already in the hair, and what you're doing to it. In your situation, they say to do the roots first, because it is virgin hair, and will take longer to absorb the color... the ends are more porous & don't need much time to process as the roots do. If you do it all at once, unless it is the exact same color as your natural hair (or what you have) it can be darker on the ends than at the root. So that's why they'll say do the roots first, and then comb through at the end. Gives you more even color. Now my hair tends to lighten naturally from the sun & turn sort of reddish... so if I dye it darker, to get to my natural dark brown, I tend to do most of the ends first and then do the root. Otherwise you can end up with 'hot roots'... from the heat of your head processing the dye quicker. It's hard to explain... but if you can manage to do the roots first, I would.

Thanks for your response. After you do the roots, how long do you wait to put it on the rest of your hair and how long do you leave it there before you rinse it off? I appreciate your help.

Hi Janelle:

Thanks for the explanation. I too am from NY by the way. How long do you wait before you comb it thru your hair and how long do you leave it on then?

Thanks.

I leave on roots at least 30 minutes, but no longer than 40, then add either a little water or shampoo to whats left in the bottle and put that on the ends fo 5 minutes. any longer for me and my hair gets dry. I have blonde hair so the ends respond rather quickly. it just freshens the color without really changing it. you don't want to let the color build up over and over again on the rest of your hair or you'll never match the roots! FUN!

It really depends on the particular color you're using... but when I do a "root first" application, it's usually 5-10 min. before rinsing that you'd apply to the ends.

Thanks Janelle:
Will follow your advise and try again doing the root method. By the way, where are you from in NY? I live in Staten Island.

Petite Syrah (Gail is my name)
