Ok, this could be in the wrong section but it seemed to fit best here since it isn't a tutorial, just a few tips I have for self tanners on the boards

First of all, I have been self tanning for 5+ years... in the first year, I tried a variety of products before I hit Loreal... nothing has ever worked better for me and that is what I continue to use. I will be writing these tips with that tanner in mind... it's gel based, kind of. Here's a picture :

Tip 1 : USE GLOVES! I use latex free gloves because latex gloves tend to get a little ouchy feeling when rubbing your skin to make sure it is all rubbed in. And makes you red... ew.

Tip 2 : EXFOLIATE! An obvious one. When you are exfoliating, pay extra attention to problem areas like knees, ankles, neck, elbows, etc. Everybody's body is different and self tanner affects all of us differently. Also, I use soft soap coconut body scrub. It works wonders and smells yummy!

Tip 3 : Start with your legs. They dry fast and you can get them out of the way in a jiffy. My upper body tends to dry slower so I do it last that way I'm not rubbing and making weird movements while it is drying. Don't want to mess it up!

Tip 4 : Go AROUND your belly button, not OVER. Or else your gonna look like you have an orange crater on your body.

Tip 5 : I'm sure your gonna have to find your own way to do this but this is how I do my back : I start at the top and reach my arms over my shoulders and get all that first. Then I move to the bottom and middle of my back, and I use the back of my hands to reach further and rub it in. It works for me and I very rarely have ended up with splotchyness... another great thing about Loreal!

Tip 6 : If you tan your hands and feet : Use a cotton ball or cosmetic sponge. When tanning your feet, don't go between your toes. It will look strange, and use sparingly around your ankles. On your hands, make sure you get between your fingers but not all the way up by your nails. My tanner blends in and makes my hands look very nice and not strange and dirty when I use this tip.

Tip 7 : Don't get dressed right after you "think" you are done drying. I usually don't wear clothes til at least an hour after. This has held true with all products I have used, if I get dressed any sooner it rubs off on my clothes. So make sure you have time to dry.

Tip 8 : Use a blow dryer on the cool setting if you have to dry quicker. It works nicely.

Tip 9 : Avoid showering/swimming for at least 24 hours after you have tanned. That way it has time to set in. This is a reason why you want to tan RIGHT when you are done showering and have nice, soft, exfoliated skin

Tip 10 : Use a lotion that has a tanner in it. Like Jergens or Olay or Loreal has this one day tanner stuff now. I have personally always used Jergens Natural Glow but I want to try the Loreal stuff. You don't have to do this every day. But this helps keep your tan dark and great looking until the next time you are ready to apply again.

Tip 11 : If once your tan has set in and you notice some blotchyness or maybe a spot that didn't get entirely rubbed in, you can use makeup remover to correct this. I use almay oil free makeup remover pads, I've never tried anything else and this has always helped correct my mess ups without removing too much.

ENNNNJOY!!!! Haha, I just got done tanning which gave me this idea.

Hope it helps you ladies that need a little advice with this

I've been using the same stuff (well not the exact same formula, but Loreal Sublime) for a year or so.

It's fairly good, I want a darker one though than the medium deep; there is a dark one but it has stupid sparkles in it and I don't need to look like Tinkerbell, and if I do, then I can buy body glitter, lol!

I have been fairly content with this product to not seek out another for such a long time but now it's really bugging me that they have the glitter in the dark one, basically forcing me to be all roller disco (In Xanadu) or find another brand.

So, I'm on the hunt for another brand, I suppose.

Yea, the sparkles are in ALL of their formulas except the gelee, I think? I've never tried that. But I was using the sublime medium/dark for so long... until they came out with this. I'm very content with everything (color, drying, how long it lasts, etc) except the sparkles. The sparkles don't bother me though for too long because they don't last after the first day of application. They always fade so I deal with it. Haha

Yeah.. Or no. Or- correct, lol!

Okay, I use the gelees because they don't have sparkles.

The sparkles in the deep formula clung to me like glue.

I'd shower the day after applying and most would come off but enough would hang around to be noticeable- usually they would end up on my face like by my eye or lip so people would notice them right way, haha!

And of course they wouldn't wash off, but they would transfer onto furniture and such.

Weird.

Thanks for the tips!! I actually just bought that exact bronzer last weekend and I'm loving it! I've used other L'Oreal bronzers before and always had good results. I like the tip about makeup remover to correct mistakes! Another thing that works really well is lemon juice - just a little on a cotton pad does a good job!

I've never tried the gelee cause I didn't like how it isn't tinted

I like to be able to see where I'm rubbing the stuff, it's an easier application for me.
I also have never used the body stuff on my face. I have always used their dual action face tanner. I like it, but it develops quicker than my body sometimes and is also a BIT oily at first. They seems to soak in pretty fast though

It never breaks me out.

Lemon juice? Interesting! I've never tried.

these are some very good tips, thanks for sharing!! i've been using the l'oreal sublime spray & it worked well, but i prefer kind you rub in better...the color was good...very real looking, but it still ended up streaking b/c i even when i thought it was dry it wasn't all the way! so i second these tips, like wearing gloves & waiting an hour before gettin dressed! thanks for sharing!

I have not used this yet but, I am feeling like using it coz I trust L'Oreal for its excellent products. I had use some outside tanning bronzers and no doubt, that are very effective. I had just started tanning and, knowing some more products according to my skin type for further application.

Great tips, I tried a couple different self tanning lotions and they all worked great.... till I want and played ice hockey... and the tan wore off underneath my pads. I looked aweful! Wonder ir L'oreal would be more resistant to rubbing off or not?

I ALWAYS let it dry for at least an hour before getting dressed and usually try to keep it easy that first day of application as far as swimming/showering/wearing light clothing... etc. Cause I have had it stain my clothing before but from a result of getting dressed too soon, and when that happened, it really did JUST that. Didn't rub off on me or make me look silly.
I advise Loreal's formula cause it is long lasting and it doesn't start to fade or rub off until about a week after application. Depending.

There are some other bronzers also that can be applied like, I got one of St. Tropez which is simply perfect and looks great after application. There are some other products like, body polish which works best.

Thank you Abbygal for that wonderful tanning tips using L'oreal. I've tried once L'oreal lotion and it works better to my skin. I think every one could help for your great tips.

Great Tip! You know I heard that self tanners get rid of cellulite and spider veins, well the appearance of them. Is this true?

I've heard the the gelee from L'oreal is good. My friends use them. But what I'm using is now is Glam Glow by Omorovicza. It's pretty amazing. Looks natural.
