Any sistahs out there to give me some feedback? I have fine, cottony hair that has been damaged off and on over the years. I have not had a relaxer on in many, many years. My hair, even though fine, is very long. Over the last few years...my hair stoped "taking and holding a press". No matter how warm or hot the comb...within 30 minutes...my hair has started to sponge up. Does anyone have any ideas? It doesn't matter what I wash, condtion or press in...I get the same results. My friend thinks a Ceramic Pro would help. I need help!

Historically, the only way black women used to be able to get their hair straight was to "press" it or "hot comb" it. A black woman, Madame Walker, invented the first pressing tool for black women. The old school terms for "straightening" is "pressing" or "hot combing"

hey girl! make sure that your hair is clean when you're pressing and maybe you can try the Maxiglide. I have natural hair as well and it works well to straighten my hair and keep it straight until i wash it out

I have a Maxiglide too and I love it! Maybe you should try some anti-frizz serum.

I love the StraightSexyHair line by Sexy Hair Concepts. I think the Power Straight Balm would work on any hair texture. You might want to look into a ceramic straightener, perhaps the CHI.

Ceramic straighteners wont do much for your hair. When I press mine i follow up with a ceramic bumping iron to "silk it out" but as far as getting the curl pattern straight, it doesnt do much for me. After you wash your hair, I would suggest using a wrapping lotion and wrapping your hair and letting it dry under a bonet dryer (like the kind in the shop). Wash and condition the hair, apply wrapping lotion (I like wrap and tap) and then part hair on the side that you prefer and wrap it around your head. Secure with sanex strips and allow to dry completely. This should alieviate your need to do a hard press on your hair, but if you do, use a mineral oil free pressing agent, preferably a cream like Dudley's Creme press or Ultra Sheen's Satin creme press. I used to press mine out with coconut oil but it may be a bit too heavy for your fine hair.

If a wrap set is too much for you time wise, you can do a straightening blow out using a hairdryer witha comb attachment and wrap and tap as the blow drying agent, setting lotion or a styling foam. These agents help your hair retain the state it is being styled in, so if you use it for curling, will help keep it curly, if you use it for straightening, will help keep it straight. The main thing is to remember to use even tension while blowdrying and pressing.

The way you describe your hair sounds like it may be a little dry and in need of a trim as well. Try an overnight deep condition with cap before your next press and see how that works out.
