Is it just me or is Microdermabrasion just a fancy name for sanding the skin down? And charging a lot of money to do it?

I've used those Sally Hanson hair removal mitts on my legs before and they basically sand the hair off and take a little of the leg skin with it. And they do leave them very smooth... They are like 800 grit sandpaper or something.....

So what's the difference between that and MDA? Besides $$$$$

I'm not condoning anyone going out in the garage and getting out the belt sander... hehe

Love Karren

I had a micro and all they did was run a sucky thing over my face. I thought there was supposed to be some sort of "sanding". So are there different kinds or levels of micros?

I watched a show called The shopping Bags. It is a consumer advocate show based in Canada on The Women's Network.

They discuss a product, and compare several product kits, to see if any work - and to what degree.

They had four women test four different microdermabrasion kits. The prices varied from inexpensive to pricey.

The one that came out on top was Neutrogena - it had a battery operated scrubing brush.

However, the bottom line was that none of the kits were worth purchasing.

The same results could be obtained from exfoliating regularly with a wash cloth.

I love The Shopping Bags!! I also bought the Neutrogena microderm kit a while ago and it did a nice job of really smoothing out the skin and making it baby soft

I do believe proper exfoliation is important, normal scrubs don't do the trick. So it's either chemical exfoliation or proper physical exfoliation such as microdermabrasion.

If you're currently on a retinoid routine or any other form of chemical exfoliation then there's probably no need for microdermbrasion.

I bought the Neutrogena kit awhile back - and expected something of a miracle for my skin.

Meh. It did leave my skin very smooth at the touch, but for the price - I rather just buy my Eskinol w/ micro beads for $3 and scrub away.

I cba using the machine, dipping, scrubing face, washing beads off face, washing machine. Im too lazy for all that haha.

Mircoderm is a deep exfoliation of the skin, done in a hygienic setting. It works more intensively than an exfoliator, and ideally should be done weekly or fortnightly. it is a great stimulant and encourages skin cell renewal.

a proper session involves massage of the skin and a special mask application. the massage helps to shift any toxins i had in my congested, acne-prone skin. i find that my skin feels softer, smoother and is more receptive to anything i put on it later.

i get mine done for AUD $40 per session. ive seen great improvement in the condition of my acne scarring after almost 10 session. yes, a little pricey, but so is most treatments for the skin.

demabrasion can cost from AUD $1500 and requires time off work and leaves the skin very red for several weeks. laser treatments can cost a lot more, and again may need time off work.

i think micro is great for my lifestyle and current budget. once my skin tone improves, i will only need to go every 3 months or so for a treatment.

I think Microdermabrasion is better than using just a scrub on your face. And using sandpaper (which there is a thread, I believe, about women who do this) is dangerous and unsanitary. I just try to use something that does deep exfoliating.

Found some 800 grit sandpaper in the garage.... guess I shouldn't try it on my face this weekend? lol

Reading all these skin care topics makes me feel like I don't take good enough care of my face!! :'(

I use clean&clear with the little micro beads every day, and then once a week I use St. Ives apricot scrub and it feels pretty rough so I don't go wild scrubbing it hard all over my face I just use it gently...

I guess I just feel there is a fine line between exfoliation and actually painfully scrubbing your face! The skin on your face is different and more delicate than that of the other areas of your body, and you are in fact constantly removing the dead layers from it if you scrub your face every day, so I don't think scrubbing or exfoliating to the point of redness is a good idea as it could cause permanent redness or scarring.

I heard that microdermabrasion is actually bad for your skin. Apparently, it rupture cells and make the skin for susceptible to UV light.

I do it once a week.I have a home kit that comes with the same type of diamond cut crystals and cream that is used in a dermatologists office. It is a physical exfoliation.I am so glad I do it because it shaves off all those layers of dead skin and brings up those layers of healthy skin to the surface quicker.
