Info from the Clinique Laboratories... Interesting info...

Technically, a wrinkle is a wound as it's a repetitive motion injury you get from frowning, smiling, squinting, etc., that never heals.

Can a wrinkle be healed?

Skin heals naturally, up to a point. For example, if you get a paper cut on your knuckle, the skin-building cells around it will close over and heal the wound, unless they're continually pulled apart by hand motions or irritated by dryness. Wrinkling is a similar process. While subjected to repeated motions, skin never gets a chance to repair itself completely.

Are wrinkles inevitable?

Not necessarily. Everybody frowns, but not everybody has a furrowed brow at forty. Heredity plays a part in how fast you wrinkle. Recent studies point to UV exposure, irritation and dehydration as major factors weakening skin's natural repair mechanisms.

Why do wrinkles deepen?

Cells respond differently to repetitive motions, depending upon their location within the wrinkle. As a result, the wrinkle develops a "split personality." Instead of healing, this response actually has the opposite effect.

Can wrinkles be ... Stopped?

Botox injections will paralyze the facial muscles that form frowns, but the effect wears off in 4 to 6 months.

Reversed?

Perhaps. Given the "split personality" of a wrinkle, injections or treatments that stimulate collagen production address part of the problem. One of the more promising areas under investigation is boosting collagen production by cells at the bottom of the wrinkle. But as long as you continue the same facial motions, wrinkles can never be completely reversed.

Cured?

No. Although diet can affect skin, no scientific research supports the theory that eating certain foods or taking antioxidant vitamins cures wrinkles.

Prevented?

While nothing can prevent wrinkles caused by repetitive motion, you can prevent wrinkling and other skin damage that results from UV exposure. Irritated skin wrinkles faster because external irritants or dehydration disrupts skin's barrier function, making it more vulnerable to UV and environmental damage.

Repaired?

Yes. Skin in optimum condition is better able to resist wrinkles, devote more energies to repair. Today's sophisticated treatment technologies offer several non-invasive options to support skin's natural repair functions.

What are my best options?

Daily, consistent preventative measures:

[*][*]Wear a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen of SPF 15 and up, starting at the earliest possible age. Look for UVA blockers such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or avobenzone (Parsol 1789).

[*]Choose daily skin care and treatments that reduce the chance of irritation.

[*]Make proper hydration a daily priority for all skin types.

[*]Reduce repetitive motions—quit smoking, wear sunglasses to avoid squinting, etc.

[*]Cut out excess sugar from your diet.
