Q: What does "broad-spectrum" sun protection mean and is a "base" tan a healthy way to protect my skin from the sun?

A: There is no such thing as a healthy tan, and in fact, a base tan is evidence that the skin has been compromised and is defending itself. The only option for safe sun is "broad spectrum" sun protection, which means that it protects against both UVA rays, which cause premature aging, and UVB rays, which cause short-term burning. Both types of rays result in cumulative sun damage (skin that looks wrinkled and older than your chronological age). Always read sunscreen labels and look for ingredients that offer broad-spectrum coverage such as Z-Cote, Parsol 1789, and antioxidant complexes including vitamins A, C, and E, which all offer protection from free radical damage. And since sunscreens don't have to be heavy or gooey to give you the protection you need, don't shy away from slathering generous amounts onto your eyes, lips, and ears—these are the most sensitive areas on your face and are susceptible to burning.
