Hi...I am new to this forum and am loving it! I have learnt so much in the past few hours on this site :clap

I have heard numerous times that it is important to cleanse, tone and moisturize your face everyday. I cleanse and moisturize without fail...but I don't use a toner.

I didn't really think it was that important. I don't know what a toner does to the skin...can someone explain to me what the use of a toner is, and which type to get, and how to apply?

toner is often used to remove any last traces of makeup/dirt/etc from your face after cleansing. personally I think if your cleanser isn't doing that you need a new cleanser. additionally toner is also used to deposit treatments onto the skin; some have BP or SA to help prevent acne; others have antioxidants; some have aloe vera or rose water to soothe sensative skin.

hello lavender and welcome to mut. i'm monnie for michigan. in a nutshell a toner helps to balance the skin after cleansing. it can also help to address some skin problems before applying a moisturizer. i have acne prone skin, so i use stridex pads as a exfoliant and toner to give me alittle added protection against breakouts.

I have read that toner isn't necessary. It brings the ph balance back to your skin faster though. I don't use toner. I use to use it at one point but I didn't see or feel a difference with it so I stopped using it.

welcome! I'm pretty new too and I never used a toner till I read a bunch of posts here a couple of weeks ago. Since then i got some toner and it has made a world of difference for my skin. I think it's lightened up some of the red spots i had from old acne and in general my face looks brighter and my face feels good all day and i don't produce much oil. If it was for this great forum i would have never discovered. make sure you put on misturizer after the toner. :clap

Toners don't "tone" anything, but they can be a great after-cleansing step to be sure you've removed all of your makeup. They can soothe the skin, and they can add hydrating ingredients or ingredients that mimic the structure of skin, which is a great addition to anyone's cleansing regimen. However, this is not true of all toners because many lack these kinds of ingredients. In the past, most toners (also known as astringents, fresheners, pore cleansers, clarifying lotions, Sea Breeze, or witch hazel) were made primarily of alcohol and other irritating ingredients, which is why Paula was so outspoken about toners being a problem for skin. Although there are still irritating toners to watch out for, there are many available that can be a helpful addition to your skin-care routine. Skin Recovery Toner represents a state-of-the-art formulation that is brimming with skin-beneficial ingredients.

I have always used a toner as part of my routine. I like what it does for my skin. WHen I'm breaking out really bad (which hasn't been for a while) I use a toner that is on the stronger side to lessen excess oil, and has some kind of AHA or salicylic acid in it to exfoliate. When my skin's behaving (like now) I just use something gentle and alcohol free to balance and freshen my skin. I read or heard somewhere that when you use a toner, it helps whatever product is applied afterwards absorb into the skin better. Yes your cleanser should be removing all traces of your makeup/dirt. But cleansers don't leave any lasting benefits on the skin because they are not in contact with the skin for very long before they are rinsed away. A toner is applied to the skin and left to absorb in. So it makes sense that it would benefit the skin.

I used to use a toner when I first started out, but after my first bottle ran out I didn't bother to get more for awhile. When I did buy more toner (a different brand) I found it didn't do anything and irritated the sensitive parts of my face (which is weird since I think the one I used first was harsher but it didn't bother me). I think toner is a good thing to have around but it depends on your skin type whether you should use it regularly. My advice is the try it and see.

Welcome to Makeuptalk Lavender.

I agree with Jessica (glamslam) about toner and I'm using toner as well. But I use only glycolic toner for blackheads stuff 3 times a week at night before bed.

It balances your P.H. level wich is supposed to be at a constant even level in order to maintain healthy skin. What happens is we strip the skin's P.H. level when we wash our skin (the same way we dry our hair out when we shampoo) So adding the toner re-balances your P.H level after washing and helps your skin readily absorb your moisturizer much better and deeper. We had to learn about the skin at school and this is what I got from it, anyway. HTH

Some feel they don't need it but I like the feel I get with toner and I feel incomplete when I don't use it! It may just be a state of mind because some people never use it and still have great skin.

I've had 2 bottles under my sink for a few months collecting dust, but I've been using toner for the past week and boy do I notice a difference. I have combination skin, with an oily t-zone and it definitely reduces (for lack of a better word) oilyness for me.

I never used toner until after joining MUT and reading all the positive posts on ACV (apple cider vinegar). I use this stuff faithfully now as my daily toner and wish I would have years ago. My esthetician has even commented on noticing a difference in my pores since i've been using it.

Are you following me? Great...I forgot about that thread. *sighs and adds another product to the rapidly growing wish list* :icon_lol:

*Sniff* *Sniff* I was wondering what that smell was. :icon_twis Yes, i'm your little shadow. :icon_chee

If you haven't tried the ACV toner yet, you MUST! I mix mine half spring water, half ACV.

Thanks for all the great information on using toner! This is really a great place for someone who wants to get some good info related to skin care.

I definitely wanna try ACV after reading all the great comments by others....can someone tell me which section in Walmart can I get it?

I think Toner is defenitely important. The 1st step is Cleansing, 2nd Tone and then 3rd moisturise. The word "tone" is not to be taken too literally, its really the exersize and working out of your muscles and body in order to firm, but after you cleanse you'll have some soapy residue still in your skin. The liquid you apply in the cotton ball "toner" will remove traces of soapy residue and other bits that water couldnt remove. Then the final step is to moisturise. Your skin has reached its true potential of cleanliness and a great moisturisure can be used. :icon_chee

Hi welcome to MUT... I don't use a toner, I find it strips my skin & makes it feel even dryer, plus does not prevent breakouts--you might try one to see if it makes a difference with your own skin,I think that's the best way of finding out whether or not toner is important to your skin or not.

Glad you've joined us here!:icon_bigg
