What should I put on now? What should I avoid? I have Derma Butter (by Epidermx), camellia and emu oils, DMAE serum, regular CoQ10 lotion (no Cu), and AlphaDerm CE. I do know to avoid Cu products. I also have AlphaDerm C+C, but I'm not sure about putting on a strong C serum immediately. Not sure about Neutrogena's CoQ10 with copper.

I did a peel about a half-hour ago .... ~35% glycolic .... made it to the 9-min mark so I washed it off as directed, figuring a min under the max was the safe route. Feel like one of you "big girls" now - LOL. Boy does my skin feel smooth (yes, I know it'll be flakey by late tonight or tomorrow morning)

I chose late afternoon for the peel figuring I might also be able to put something on the skin before I hit the sack around midnight. My concern is what to put on now.

Thanks for any help,

Kathy

Hi Kathy

I'm really glad to see your post b/c I just ordered a 40% peel Friday and can't wait to try it. What kind of DMAE serum do you use?

I have MUAC's. Only got it about 4 days ago, so can't give you any feedback on its effectiveness. On most products, they say it takes an average of 3-8 weeks to see results, depending on the product, your age, skin type, etc.

I use emu oil/aloe/idebenone moisturizer after my peel. Once I put on the dmae/vit e/vit c product after the peel and in really stung.

I'm guessing it was the vit C that stung .... the acid properties of it on top of freshly peeled/exfoliated skin .... soooo I'll definitely stay away from vit C anything till manana. Thanks, fire69

Thanks, Kim ... that's what I ended up doing ... just the DermaButter (danged but that stuff is soooo soothing) plus a little Emu right after the peel .... applied DMAE, CoQ10 and a little more emu about 6 hrs later, right before bed.

After what I read on the TCA peel post a short while back, it'll be a LONG time before I even think of doing one of those ... and not sure I ever will. No flakeys this morning. Last time I had some, but then I had used 50% glycolic for a min and I had done dermabrasion the previous night. This time I took your advise and allowed 3 days after dermabrading before doing a peel, and this one was only ~35% (glycolic). I'm alive, face hasn't fallen off, and only a few very small red blotchies this morning ... life is good :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Update ... just looked closely and I do have a few very small areas of flakeys, but very minor. From what I understand, it's normal.

Why should one avoid copper after a peel? I know its been stated but what is the reason? When I got my peel from platinum skincare.com it stated to use the copper after the peel along with emu oil. I thought I had a good regimen down but now I'm confused!

I was more talking about the higher-level Cu products, like SuperCop. The copper used in SCRP's is Cu+2. That "+2" means it has two electrons looking around to attach to something, like O (oxygen) ... at which point it oxidizes and becomes a free radical, the very thing we try to eliminate by using antioxidents. Some sources say to wait 4-6 hrs after a peel, others say to wait 12 hrs. I looked up the Cu products from platinumskincare.com and their regenerating serum does say it's compatible with AHA's, so I'm sure it's a lower level of concentration vs something like SuperCop or SuperCop2x. As long as you make sure you double-thoroughly rinse off the peel and stick with the lower level Cu product designed for after a peel, I guess it's fine. If there's any trace of acid left on your skin, the attraction of the acid for O will cause it to link with the Cu and oxidize it. I like to play it safe when it comes to my skin.

Immediately after a peel (40% glycolic) I would use a few drops of copper serum mixed with a few drops emu oil. Sometimes it tingled a bit but it was not bothersome in any way. By the way I am using the copper serum not the more intense super cop or supercop2. So you are saying if it doesn't "sting like all get out" it is still not a good thing to do? I really don't understand all the scientific terms all that well so...oxygenation of the glycolic acid is not a good thing? In other words is it harmful to skin?

On another note, after using the copper religiously for a few weeks now I am noticing some clogged pores on the sides of my nose near the bridge. I am hoping this is just my skin purging. Does copper help skin purge or is it strictly for remodeling? TIA

I am using the second level of copper serum from platinum skincare. The directions that accompanied the glycolic peel stated to use the copper along with emu directly after so I suppose it should be the correct thing with tat paticular serum. Platinum skincare also sell the super cop and supercp2 but the way it is described I don't think it would suit my skin that well. Maybe one day I will be able to work up tp it but for now the Intense Copper Serum seems to be helping just fine without irritation or burning. I usuall pet the peel on before I take a shower so there is absolutely no trace of acid left on my skin afterwards.

Kim suggested in a previous post that perhaps the emu applied immediately after a lower Cu product (or mixed as you do it) may help protect the Cu from oxidizing and I think she's on track there. Also, the emu helps "push" the Cu in, so that could get it doing its intended benefit quickly.

Acids attract oxygen, it's their nature. A certain amount of oxygen is not only beneficial, but necessary. Too much can be harmful. That's why they tell you not to use a strong vitamin C with an SCRP. Vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid. It therefore attracts oxygen which then oxidizes the copper and negates the very benefits of Cu ... the Cu is not free to combine with elements in our skin because it is used up (oxidized). HTH

Found this info on the platinum skincare site:

We are a relatively new company and have been in business for just over 3 wonderful years. All of our acid products are produced in an FDA registered lab especially for us! We use only reagent grade acids (that is the absolute best acid you can find)! Each of our product batchs come with certification on the pH levels and %'s.

We have experienced a big growth since the begining, and are going to be expanding into a full service spa, as well as our store front! We hope to open more stores/spas in the next few years! ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> We do have aestheticians on staff, and are open 5 days a week (9:30-6) to assist all of our customers over the phone, in store, and via email.

Our product lines are used in Dr.'s offices/Spas/Clinics all across the US. We have had a wonderful experience with this new avenue, and have heard so much positive feedback from our professional clients that we are just astounded!

Copper Serum Yes, the products we carry are from directly from Dr. Pickart. Procyte is his company as well. The products they carry are his 1st generation products. The products we carry are his New, 2nd generation. They are much stronger and very resistant to breaking down when used with potent products such as retin-a and glycolic acid creams! We are extremely pleased with their results ... as are our customers! ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

So the copper I bought is the 2nd generation. I am hoping using the emu oil will slow down the oxygenation process then , correct?

The site where I've bought all my stuff is platinumskincare.com. I was just reading more on their site and they are located in Michigan as I am but are only get this ...about 10-15 minutes from me in chesterfield twp. I live in Harrison twp. They do have a store/spa so I am going there one day soon and get a very comprehensive lesson on all this stuff.

"used with" does not necessarily mean immediatly before or after. DO read everything on his do's, dont's, and suggestions before proceeding and you'll be fine.

For instance, this is right from his site ... (I made the two sentences red so they'd stand out for you)

"4. Hydroxy acids or exfoliation methods increase rebuilding.
Skin exfoliating hydroxy acids are often used to increase SRCP effects. Normally one product is used in the morning and the other at night.
Hydroxy acids exist naturally on the skin's surface. They act to loosen the chemical links between older skin cells and allow their removal. This removal of older skin allows your skin cells to move to the surface and speed skin renewal. Hydroxy acids slowly dissolve skin lesions and scar tissue.
Some people use SRCPs one day and hydroxy acids on alternate days.
Stronger hydroxy acids work faster but overuse can be irritating."
That is so cool that platinumskincare has a spa/store so near you! I'm jealous - lol. You should have a blast there. One of these days when I find a great spa I'd like to treat myself to a spa day ... or maybe even a weekend.

Here is some other info from the website:

How to Use Renewing Your Skin and Improving Skin Color
Apply a small amount of the Intense Regenerating Serum once or twice daily. Start gradually then increase the amount applied. You can follow with our glycolic acid 15% cream for intense overnight renewal. Or, perform one of our glycolic peels and then apply the serum for complete rejuvenating inside and out!*If your skin is very sensitive or already irritated, start with a very light amount of Serum every other day for a week. This will allow your skin to re-build its natural skin barrier. Then after the initial week, use more Serum.

Cautions: In some persons, there may exist previously developed skin allergies to common cosmetic ingredients. If you notice severe itching or skin reactions after use of either of the products, discontinue use of the products. The ingredients in our Serum are non-irritants, non-allergens, and non-comedogenic and have passed numerous safety tests.

*Dr. Pickart has invented more clinically-proven products for skin and hair regeneration than any other scientist or physician in history.

Yes, as noted before, his Intense Regenerating Serum is obviously formulated for safe use for just about anyone with a 15% glycolic. As with any intense treatment, do a test patch first to check for reactions. Even though his products are formulated to work with glycolic acids and he's tested them a lot, there are precautions even he suggests ... plus the myriad of variances in different skin types. You might want to do a test patch if you move up in intensity too, like if you later decide to move up from 15% glycolic to a 20 or 25% glycolic, just to make sure your skin is ok with it. I'm sure you'll get some great first-hand detailed information when you visit their store/spa. Can't wait to hear about your experience there! Bring us back all the goody info and have fun!:icon_smil

I like 100% aloe gel to soothe the skin immediately after, put it on thick lick a mask, then wipe off. Deifintely would not put vit.c on becuase it is acidic, and doe tend to burn. In my school we put a multivit serum and gel from SKinfitness. It natural and doent clog pores.

I started with 40% lactic acid last November, and I now do a weekly 65% lactic acid peel.

I used to put SuperCop on after the peel, but it gave me hideous zits.

I now put nothing at all on my skin after a peel, unless the area under my eyes feels tight. I use a little emu oil I got as a sample, or Pond's dry skin cream, which is mostly oil.

I put a nice thick coat of benzoil peroxide on my forehead after each peel, also. I have the worst milia (I think that's what they are - flesh-colored bumps that mimic zits) all over my forehead.

I just had a Cosmedix Benefit peel done on Thursday (todays Monday) - I was told by my esthetician that after a peel you should only gently cleanse the skin and apply sunscreen. Don't rub, scrub or pick at the skin. Don't apply moisturizer and heavy creams because the skin needs to slough off naturally...also, you do not want to "stimulate" the skin at this time with Vitamin C, Retinol A, etc...but let it heal for 3-4 days at least. I have not worn makeup or anything on my skin but sunscreen since Friday...Needless to say, yea I've peeled...ALOT but no scabs or anything bad - I just look like I've had a bad sunburn on my face and it's healing.. All the info I read on the net says applying regular or heavy moisturizer cremes after a peel will slow the sloughing and possibly seriously clog pores. My gal called me today to check on me and said the results I have are normal and by the end of the week my skin should be done peeling...and start on the road to healing fully. As of Friday I can start back to using Vitamin C and Retinol 4% creme at night under my moisturizer, etc...starting tomorrow I can use my regular moisturizer only. So, a peel is a process....and my esthetician told me when it comes to peels - patience is the hardest part. She said just let your skin heal and don't stress out.
