Little background:  i'm 42, fair/med skin, blondish hair.....i've noticed lately alot of lines/wrinkles, puffiness, dark circles ETC....maybe i'm being too hard on myself, and i know i'm getting older, but what products do you guys recommend to help these aging issues?

Also, what make up would you recommend that doesn't just make the wrinkles look worse?

And lastly, when a product tells you to "avoid the eye area", i never know how far down they mean, like right on the bone underneath?  I know that sounds ridiculous, but i really have no idea LOL.

Thanks for any advice.

Jenn

Hi JNiccolai:

I'm not an expert but have read so many things about skincare so  wish what I read can help you a little.

First of all you need to put on efficient sunscreens immediately. If search on google, you can see countless articles talking about UV protection and that UV rays are the second largest cause of skin problems(the first one, of course, is unhealthy lifestyle. ) It's never too late to start protection.  If you are already wearing sunscreens but see no effect, it may be:

1. Not enough amount: remember at least 1ml for face. That's a 1cm cube of cream or 2 quarter size of liquid. No matter what kind of products you use, you should feel there's a film on your face- if not, most likely you are not using enough because it's the "film" that cut off uv rays. I've tried so many products, from thick paste to watery gel, if used at proper amount, they must form a film.

2. Not enough reapply after sweatering: whenever the "film" is damaged, you need to repair it :p /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

3. Wrong product: stay away from all the sunscreens in your local pharmacy. As far as I can see, there's no good product in store. They are either unstable(which is equal to inefficient) or have terrible texture.

Among the various products I've tried, I recommend Skinceuticals physical fusion uv defense spf 50 (the tinted version), shiseido urban environment  spf 42, shiseido ultimate spf 55 cream, burnout eco-sensitive spf 30. The list is in-completed yet and you may notice that most of them are expensive- I just can't find a sunscreen with all four features: safe, effective,

4. Too much sun, so strong that any sunscreen can't survive. I have to admit that even the best sunscreen can't block out all the uv rays. So the best way is not to expose yourself to strong sunshine.

Secondly, there are many proven anti-aging ingredients, popular ones like: AHA (a kind of acid, used for exfoliating), Retinol (for wrinkles), Antioxidant (for prevention. the most popular antioxidant is vitamin c because it's multi-task), peptides(many kind of them, many uses!), copper-peptide(different from ordinary peptides! this is for repair.). To know more about skincare products, I recommend beautybrain's blog and forum, essentialdayspa's forum, truthinaging blog...

Last but not least, botox, raser light, micro-needles,,, at your age I think there are most effective ways. Consult doctors before you try.

Oh I forgot, stay happy and this is the secret to stay young forever! SMILE:D

yes spf is very important thats the cause of the damaged skin and wrinkles! My favorite is also skinceuticals physical fusion UV defense because every time i wear it, it doesnt leave my skin greasy at all. hi! i'm 36 and there are a few things that work for me that i can suggest.first,an enzyme exfoliant.i've found that they brighten my skin way more than the scrubby kind that just end up making me red and irritated.i like the microdelivery one in the orange tube by philosophy and the juice beauty green apple peel.exfolikate is really good but it's expensive!i use one pretty much every other day to keep my face from looking and feeling dull.it depends on your skin type how often you should use one.also,a good serum as a moisturizer.i like caudalie vinoperfect.i really do think less is more as i've gotten older.a good cleanser, enzyme exfoliant, and a serum for whatever it is you feel like specifically needs targeting.puffiness, discoloration, etc.also, instead of a heavy cream if i'm feeling dry i keep a bottle of grapeseed oil to use at night and that takes care of it.i hope that helps some!

wow nice to see another fan of skinceuticals. This brand rarely goes on sale and most store wide sales  exclude it.

But recently dermstore has a 20%off sale which does include skinceuticals! Plust there's 10% cashback on mr.rebates. Definitely the best deal!

I love every item you mentioned! But they are also a little expensive to me so I'm using dupes, like alpha hydrox oil-free gel, and some samples of enzyme peel mask.

I only do deep exfoliating once a week (like 10% AHA OR peel mask) and believe it's enough- too much peel will cause sensitive and thin skin.

By the way, after peeling, sunscreen is even more important because skin is thinner.

Hi,

Everyone has already recommended great products; I'll add (and I have extremely sensitive skin) Daywear cream from Estee Lauder (has sunscreen); at night Roc Deep Wrinkle Cream with retinol - use sparingly at first or every other night and then put your moisturizer over it.

I didn't see that anyone has mentioned this, but when I was your age and really noticed my age in the mirror, it was also a sign of lifestyle.  Even if you haven't been having late nights and a lot of stress, you need to eat more vegetables and less red meat, drink a lot of water, and sleep at least 8 hours.  Do that for about a week or two and I'll bet that you'll feel better about what you see in the mirror.  The signs that you mentioned were nearly always caused by stress, fatigue, not even relaxation, and a bad diet, or a diet where I wasn't eating enough of the good stuff!

my eyes always seem puffy and wrinkly/dry.....i have alot of the philosophy products including the help me retinol night treatment, can i use that under my eyes?
What can i put on my lids?

Thanks again!

For dry eye areas get a heavy duty moisturizer, if you are getting a lot of flakiness I would reccommend aveeno naturals eczema therapy (it says its for eczema but this worked amazing when I had lots of flakiness due to benzoyl peroxide), if the area is just dry try a moisturizer like aquaphor. Both of these moisturizers are eye safe. having a moisturized eye area will help with the wrinkly appearance, puffiness is going to be a lot harder to correct. The best thing I can reccommend is tea bag compresses.

I actually sat with grape seed oil on my eyes for about 15 minutes last night then patted off LOL, it doesn't flake just always seems dry and extra wrinkly and i'm not sure why!  It's worse when i put on foundationit just seems to sink in!  I've always looked younger than my age, so it's freaking me out LOL

Thanks
