So, hopefully my dad will call me back and I will get to go to a dermatologist for the first time. Everyone always told me that my acne would go away with age. I'm 22, and it still isn't going away LoL. So time to take more drastic measures.

So what should I expect? Should I go totally bare faced, or can I wear makeup and take it off there? Should I request any products? Or just leave it totally to the dr.? What kind of questions will be asked?

Also, a fear of mine is that the derm. is gonna make me go foundation-less while using whatever product I'm given. I can't do that lol

Thanks for the help, ladies!

the first and only time i went, she asked questions like how long have i been breaking out, etc. basic ones. then, she checked my skin. then, she gave me my prescriptions and told me how to use it.

she was SO nice, so it made it easy when it was time for ME to ask questions.

good luck and let us know how it goes!

What did she end up prescribing you?

I'm really nervous lol

Don't be nervous! My derm just looked at my face under a bright light for just a moment (while I was wearing all my mu) and was able to diagnose the problem right away and wrote a prescription. We then talked for a while while he gave me a list of things to do to prevent the acne. (Technically, I didn't have true acne but clogged pores due to my super oily skin, so we talked about how to keep my skin clean and free of oil.)

I have never heard of a dermatologist not letting their patients wear any makeup while on basic acne treatments. However, if he knows what he is doing, he will specify what kind or brands of mu you are allowed to wear. For example, my derm would only let me wear Prescriptives brand, since he said that was the only brand that was truly noncomedogenic (won't clog your pores).

I continued to go back every 6-12 months for checkups. All the prescriptions worked fairly well, but we did switch prescriptions several times until we find the best combination. By the end, I was using Clindagel and Tazorac, plus following all his rules for washing my face and such, and that was working very well! Just an occasional tiny blemish that I could easily hide with mu, I can deal with that

And if you're interested, I have all the information he told me in my notepad!

Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you!

PS: 22 isn't that old in terms of acne, I knew a lot of 20-ish college students who were still fighting acne. I am 25 and still have very oily skin, and while I am able to keep my acne under control with over-the-counter products now, I would still have a face full of acne if I quit using the products! For that matter, my dad is in his 50's and still has oily skin, I guess that is what I get to look forward to

don't be nervous at all! she prescribed differin and some other topical crap i never used lol sorry, it was over a year ago.

i think it would be better for you to go bare faced. he/she will probably ask u what problem(s) you r having w/ your skin. i would tell the dermatologist everything possible,

especially if you have sensitive skin, allergic to certain medicines, and if you are currently

taking perscription medicines.

you can ask the derm what products would be best for your skin. of course, he/she

will examine your skin and ask you questions abt it

hope this helps-good luck

I've never been to a dermatologist, but my sister used to go to one. I wish you the best of luck chica!

I have been wanting to go see a dermatologist for awhile now, so this is a great thread!! Let us know how it goes, Ashley

Firstly I hope it all goes well. Don't be worried about anything although don't raise your hopes up too high. I did that before my first dermatologist appointment and was thouroughly dissapointed (I think the guy just sucked).

Anyway, you should be able to wear make-up no problem. Mention Erythromycin (orally) and see if he thinks it would suit you, this is what my doctor gave me and it worked amazing. It took 2 months to work but made me clear. Let us know how it goes.

Good luck.

the one time i went i didn't wear any foundation. he just examined my skin closely and asked general questions like how often i broke out, etc. then he just wrote me a prescription for a cream and pills. good luck with your appt!

i needed this post. i'm going back to my derm on friday and she spends like 5 minutes with me. i feel guilty telling her all the alternative stuff i do because i don't want her to tell me not to use my aztec clay mask and such.

But you need to tell her what else you do, because it might interfere with your prescriptions!
I know at one point I had two prescription creams that my derm said I can't use at once or they "cancel each other out", I had to use one in the morning and the other in the evening for it to work!
