The Atzen Five-Step Technique (to be done daily or every other day in front of a mirror after your nightly cleansing/toning/moisturizing regimen):

Step 1: Place your index, middle and ring fingers behind your ear lobe on each side of your neck. Gently apply pressure in a “press and release†rocking technique as you slowly work your fingers down the side of your neck until you reach the clavicle (collarbone). Repeat three times, starting again from behind your ear.

Step 2: Fan those same three fingers on both hands (index, middle, ring) directly under your nose. Using the same press-and-release method, “walk†your fingers away from your nose across your cheeks until you reach your ear lobe. Then, continue down the sides of your neck until you again reach your collarbone as you did in step one. Repeat three times.

Step 3: Place the tip of your ring finger in the inside corner of your eye next to your nose. Using very gentle pressure, “press and release†five times. You should not press so hard that you feel your eye bone. “This will immediately relieve any swelling around the eye area,†Atzen says.

Step 4: Using your index finger and thumb, grasp your eyebrow at its thickest point (closest to the middle of your forehead), and pinch gently while slowly moving away from your eyes. You should also be including a small portion of your eyelid when you do this. Repeat two to five times. “This will alleviate dark circles and improve allergy symptoms,†Atzen says.

Step 5: Lastly, with both hands on both sides of your face, place your three fingers (index, middle and ring) on your temples. Your index finger should be just about at your hairline, your middle finger directly on your temple and your ring finger just next to your eye. Using the same pumping motion (staying on your temple), “press and release†your fingers toward your eye without losing contact with your skin. Repeat five times. “This will relieve stress and stress-related headaches,†says Atzen.

“It’s very important to begin this therapy with a skin care regimen that is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), or it won’t be effective,†Atzen says. “It’s equally important to repeat the massage regularly, because the overall skin condition continues to improve after the treatments, as the skin’s physiological response has been stimulated.†Not only are these steps effective at bedtime, but they also can be done individually during the day, at your convenience, according to Atzen. “If stress hits during the day or your allergies are bothering you, you can practice steps four and five at your desk at work or waiting in line at the grocery store,†she says.

Salmon Milt-based Skin Care

Does It Live Up to Its Claims?

In addition to developing unique skin care therapies, Catherine Atzen has also spent years developing a line of skin care products designed to “address the past, present and future needs of the skin.â€

Her secret ingredient? A biopolymer extracted from salmon milt (sperm). Called Integral DNA™, Atzen says this extract is credited with the ability to regenerate severely damaged skin tissue, even that from a burn. “Integral refers to the fact that the DNA polymer remains intact – not broken or damaged – during extraction, allowing the Integral DNA to hold 10,000 times its volume in water,†she says.

“All that’s saying is that it carries water into the skin,†says Dr. Patricia Wexler in response to Atzen’s claims in a Dateline NBC news story about Atzen’s products. Pamela Genes*, a skin care specialist in Chicago, contends that it’s possible that the salmon extract provides benefits, though there are so many companies using these kinds of naturally-derived extracts that it’s hard to pinpoint success. Her recommendation for good hydration? Any moisturizer that’s gel-based. “Make sure you apply all moisturizers, whether for body or face, while your skin is still wet,†says Genes. “That helps to seal in the moisture.â€

But Atzen maintains that this unique ingredient works wonders. Her system and product line have been discussed in numerous publications, including Newsweek, Vogue, Elle and cosmetic and skin care trade publications.

“Our first defense for skin changes associated with aging is to elevate the hydration of the dermis to a youthful level,†Atzen says. “This works to minimize wrinkles, dryness, roughness and other signs of aging.†All of Atzen’s skin care products are hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, PABA free and free of mineral oil, alcohol and fragrance.

As a daily regimen for all skin types, Atzen recommends the following two skin care systems:

Biologique

Atzen’s Biologique™ skin balancing system is a light formulation designed to cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and hydrate all skin types, even the most sensitive, without clogging the pores. “It offers flawless protection from daily pollutants; it encourages repair and prevents the premature deterioration of the skin's structure,†says Atzen. The system includes a make-up removal lotion/cleanser, which contains marine collagen, calendula and vitamin E. For toning, the Biologique™ system includes a tonic lotion with lime blossom and vegetal glycerin. As a last step to tighten pores and re-hydrate, Atzen suggests her Biologique Modeling Mask with Fucogel®. “It creates a visible ‘face lift’ effect for tired looking skin,†she says.

Spin Control

Another three-product regimen (which Atzen says makes a great gift for yourself or a friend) is what she calls Spin Control. This set of products includes a 12-day treatment of the Integral DNAâ„¢ (in six little flasks) as well as Eye and Lip Emulsion to help alleviate under-eye circles and the Biologiqueâ„¢ Night Cream (also containing the Integral DNAâ„¢) for intense hydration.

“Most men and women invest in Atzen product because they recognize the intrinsic value,†says Atzen. “We deliver skin care solutions that work.â€
