The skin is the largest organ on the human body and is sensitive to external factors such as dirt, wind and pollution and internal factors such as depression and stress. Therefore, your skin can benefit from a facial mask every once in a while, to relax and refresh your face. Most masks on the market are great for your skin, but are usually quite expensive. So after reading this you should find that you don't necessarily have to spend tonnes of money to look after your skin, as some of the best products are in your own fridge.

Strawberries are a mild astringent and can be ground, mixed with aloe vera or yoghurt and applied as a thin mask to help oily skin.

Strawberry Mask

4-5 very ripe medium sized strawberries

2 tsp of heavy cream

1 tsp of honey

Carefully rinse strawberries with lukewarm water and dry with a clean cloth. In a small bowl, mash the strawberries with a fork and add the cream and honey. Mix well, then apply to your face and leave on 20-30 minutes then rinse well.

Avocado's balance hormone levels, keep the skin supple and are particularly good for dry skin.

Avocado Mask

Mash half an avocado and apply to entire face. Let it set for about 20 minutes and then gently wipe off with a damp cloth. Almonds are good for exfoliating as they help fight acne and helps improve conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Almond MaskGrind 1 tsp of almonds into a fine meal in a blender or food processor. Mix almond meal together with 1 tsp of honey and 1 egg white. Apply to face and let set for about 15 minutes. Gently remove with a damp face cloth. Cucumber slices over the eyelids are good for reducing puffiness and soothing tired eyes.

Cucumber Mask

Puree a 1/2 peeled, sliced cucumber in a blender or food processor and ad 1 tblsp of yoghurt. Apply to face and let it set for about 20 minutes then remove. Honey is a natural antiseptic and can be used in masks to heal blemishes or cuts.

Honey Mask

Wipe your face with a warm cloth to open up the pores and then smear honey over your skin. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. Wipe your face with a cold face cloth to close the pores and continue doing this for 3 days in a row, then once a week. Egg Yolks are high in Vitamin A and also very effective in healing blemishes. Simply apply a raw egg yolk to your face and neck for 30 minutes and rinse with cool water.

Egg Yolk and Honey Mask

Mix one egg yolk with a little honey and spread it over your face until it dries. Rinse it off and your skin will feel fresh and soft. Oatmeal, when ground, can be added to a mask to act as an exfoliant and to absorb excess facial oil.

Oatmeal Mask

Mix oatmeal and skim milk in a blender so that it turns into a paste. Apply it to your face and allow it to dry then wipe it off with a damp cloth. Herbal teas can make fantastic toners and facial steams. Ass your favourite one to a bowl of boiling water, drape a towel over your head, bend down over the bowl and soak up the fragrant steam.

Exfoliating Masks

3 tblspns of olive oil

1 tblsp of kosher salt mix

Mix together and gently rub onto dry skin, such as elbows, feet, cheeks and forehead. A strange, but effective way of exfoliating is to mix regular kitty litter with water and strain out the grit. I haven't tired this one myself, but I hear your skins ends up feeling really good!

For oily skin, mix together puree flesh of a tomato and some potato flour to make a paste. Apply to your skin for 15 minutes and remove with warm water.

Mix 1 1/2 tspns of honey, the juice from 1/2 a lemon and a small carton of plain yoghurt. Stir in 1 whipped egg white and apply to face and let it set for about 15 minutes then remove. nzgirl
