i havent been using a face moisturizer and was just wondering what is a good one that i could get cheap. i would like to start using one and put it on before i do my make-up but i dont know anything about moisturizers. i need help!! lol

I just graduated from esthetics school and I'm in the process of getting my license now so I can say for winter moisturizers are a big thing. If you're going to wash your face with a cleanser, do it once a day (at night) and use a very mild cleanser like Cetaphil's gentle skin cleanser. rinse your face in the morning with water and PAT dry (not scrub). For moisturizers, well I use a Repechage moisturizer, but I know it's kind of costly. Any gentle non-comedogenic moisturizer will work well, but the best products will cost a bit more. If your face gets really dry, avoid sterilizing and alcohol products because a lot of them will dry your skin out like crazy. You can see that in the ingredients. Make sure water is one of the first ones. I hope that helps! Let me know if you need any info :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

thank you so much that actually helps alot, but i have really oily skin so i guess i could use a little alcohol lol

Sure ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I have really oily skin too, so I know just how hard it is. Especially when you have dry skin, it produces more oil than usual. Just be really careful when you wash your face. Only do it once a day (at night) and then moisturize afterwards and leave it on overnight. If you need it in the morning too, just use a real little bit because of your skin type.

I am concerned your tutors have described a product that contains sulphate surfactants as mild. Sulphates are known irritants which research suggests thin the protective stratus corneum and are therefore contra-indicated in any dermatitis or dry skin condition (see link). Speaking for myself, even shampoo bubbles running down my arm is sufficient to aggravate my atopic eczema.

Sulphate surfactants and other harsh cleansers or over-exfoliating can cause your skin to produce excess sebum to protect itself from chemical onslaught or dehydration.

Unfortunately it is possible to have oily and dehydrated (low water) skin simultanously so don't think oily skin needs harsh products. Proven hydrating ingredients include urea, lactic acid, aloe vera, olive squalane and lanolin. Urea and lactic acid are both found naturally in the skin and gently exfoliate as they hydrate; squalane and lanolin are chemically very similar to skin's natural oils but are non-comedogenic (do not block pores). Eucerin 5% urea face cream is very light yet highly effective - it is available on prescription here in the UK! - if you want a natural product you might consider Weleda baby calendula face cream. I sometimes mix this half and half with aloe vera gel to make it absorb more quickly for make up. Neither are expensive but both get consistently positive reviews, I have also heard great things about the California Baby products which are based on aloe vera. IMO there are good and bad products at all price points, many high end products are based on mineral oil which is VERY cheap and doesn't have any magical properties.

I'm in the UK so can't help you with stockists other than to say those products are available in the US, Amazon and eBay are options if you cannot find a nearby stockist on the websites

Depends what the ingredients are as to whether your aloe lotion it is suited to the face, but you could do  a patch test or post a list of ingredients and we can look through them.

ok thank you, i will have to put the list up some time tomorrow, but thank you sooo much for your help

I'm just stating cheap over-the-counter products that could be bought anywhere. I have really oily skin so sulphur products work really well on my skin - but that's just me. Everybody has different skin and products work differently on each individual. I wasn't taught that it was a good thing, but products like neutrogena work really well on my skin type even with my dermatologist prescribed medication.
