I've been thinking long and hard about this and I'd be interested to see what you girls (and guys!) think.

I am a habitual eye rubber. Especially at night, they get really itchy and I rub.

Well, I always put eyecream on and wash my eyemakeup off before bed, but is my rubbing going to negate my efforts to keep my eyes looking good?

I dont want to find out when Im 40 that rubbing my eyes in my 20s has aged my eye skin!

I know that the skin there is supposed to be muc more sensitve to rough handling.

So, what do you reckon? am I undoing all my hard work?

Well I would say that you are pulling at your delicate skin around your eye & can see where that could cause lines eventually. They say to sleep on your back for this same reason so that the pillow isnt tugging at you skin.

i dunno, too much rubbing isn't good for your eyes. if your eyes get itchy and hurt, maybe they're dry ; you might wanna put some drops in them, simply like physiological saline. i don't rub my eyes too frequently, mostly because one day i rub an eye too hard and the contact sort of lift up on my eye. i managed to get it down onmy iris, but it's scary and a little painful.

You really should break the habit of eye rubbing. It's not good, your skin will become stretched.

thats what I thought. I'm going to have saggy baggy eyes because I rub them. LOL

stop that rubbing, lady! get some eye drops asap! tugging in that area is not a good thing and can promote lines and sagging. be gentle!

I have thought the same thing. I use to have the worst eye allergies ever. When I was a teenager and in my early twenties my eyes would itch like mad! My eyes only itch like that every now and again these days, thank God! I don't know about my fine lines in that area. They form when I smile, so I think smiling caused them. Maybe I should frown more.

It is totally possible rubbing would weaken the skin and cause sagging though.

My theory is all that itching and rubbing caused my dark areas on the inner area of my eyes beside my nose area. I have read that disruption of blood flow in the tiny capillaries in the eye area cause the blood to pool instead of flow thus causing the dark areas.

I've heard that stretching the skin around your eyes isn't good either. It's hard not to though. I have noticed even sleeping that I can wake up with lines from sleeping on one side of my face, as someone mentioned. Try not to rub if you can help it! My eyes are dry so I use drops every morning and night.

hey rosie, i remember reading about the skin of the eye but forgive me if i make an error, it was years back.

some of the skin around the eye has little or no elastin, which acts to minimise wrinkling but giving the skin elasticity and the ability to withstand basic pulling.

overrubbing or pulling on the area can therefore create permanent damage. this can be from things such as rubbing itchy eyes, to vigorously washing the eyes, and even in makeup application (eg. pulling eye down to apply eye liner).

eye creams are great at providing some moisture to the area to lessen the risks of ageing (obviously drier skin tends to have fine lines more easily) but since the eye skin is not receptive to all ingredients, they can only go so far.

i hope this helps! thats why, if you notice on some posts of mine, i am very particular about removing makeup carefully and not pullin on the eye too much!

I've never even thought about that! I rub my eyes all the time, too, because of allergies.

i found the name of those drops by alcon. they're called Napchon A. they do an amazing job of helping sooth red, irritated, scratchy eyes and they're available over the counter at any drug store.

Another one, if you have dry eyes, is Systane. My eye doc recommended them and they really help. They're also available in any drugstore.
