I keep hearing about people saying to exfoliate...I am assuming you are using an exfoliator? Erm...what does exfoliating really do?

What exfoliator do you recommend?

Exfoliating is removing the dead cells from your skin, revealing healthy, new skin. If you don't exfoliate now and then, products like sunscreen or particular topicals for acne or anti-aging can't get into your skin to do any good ... they just sit on top ... ie, the dead cells act as a barrier to prevent penetration.

There are lots of ways to exfoliate, from using a facial wash containing exfoliating particles (they are sold as "scrubs" or "pore-refining cleansers"), to cleansers and toners containing Alpha or Beta Hydroxy Acids, to microdermabrasion products. Unless you're looking to correct a specific problem, a good facial scrub or toner with AHA/BHA would be fine for you.

I do a microdermabrasion once a week and a glycolic or lactic acid peel once a week. On the days I won't be doing either of those, I use a cleanser with 2% salicylic acid followed by ACV toner. HTH

Exfoliators are for cleaning the skin and getting rid of dead skin sells. Some people say it's good to exfoliate at least once a week. I use Kanebo silk peeling powder for this purpose. It's very mild but works for me since other exfoliators are to harsh for my skin and make it red.

Well these gals pretty much covered it! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I've been using St. Ives Apricot Scrub (the medicated one for blemish prone skin, in white bottle) and my skin is so smooth. Like a baby's butt! lol I still break out, but I think it has helped it subside a bit. It's cheap-$3 and by far the best in the price range. They have formulas for sensitive skin, etc. I think 4 different ones. You will have to try it because I know some girls on here love it and some absolutely hate it. At least it won't break the bank if it happens not to work.

Lainy try using a chemical exfoliator with Beta Hydroxy Acid. It is oil soluble so it can clear out the debris in your pores. My holy grail product is PC Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion or Gel from Skin Care Solutions http://www.getthatglow.com It has really cleared up those blackheads up.

I use Neutrogena Deep Cleaning Gentle Scrub..and I really like this one...

I have been using Stila's Petal Infusions about 3x a week and I really like it. My skin is very dry and using this product, I dont have the flakiness and my skin feels smooth.

I use an exfoliator, but now that I think about it, do you really think dead skin cells don't remove themselves? Perhaps this just a way to expedite the process. If I never shed my dead skin cells, I'd look raunchy. Exfoliation is reccommended for oily to combination ski, but should be used with caution on dry or senstive skin.

i use burts bees citrus scrub. it doesnt dry your skin out, or cause you to break out or anything (and its all natural stuff). plus it doesnt cost much (like $8) and its pretty concentrated so it lasts a long time. i personally love it.

I am very oily on the t-zone..but quite dry on the cheeks..

should I only exfoliate on the oily areas?

I have very dry skin and I exfoliate...not sure if I agree with the oily & combination ..I do use a gentle scrub..but exfoliating helps keeps those pesky dry patches away and my rough dry skin very smooth..and I moisturize afterwards.

Just got a free sample of that (Neutrogena) in a gift bag from a women's conference. Really great product! I was using something pretty cheap before (I can go gritty because my skin is super oily), but I will look for this product as I can catch it on sale. I notice that awhile after I exfoliate, the oil plugs bits loosen themselves, come to the surface, and release from my pores. Exfoliating is something I have "discovered" late in the overall scheme of skin care...it's a must for oily folk..

I use Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion in a Jar once a week, and St. Ives Apricot Scrub about 2x a week. It really does help keep skin smooth and looking fresh. Helps makeup look and feel better on your skin as well.

I am not very experienced with exfoliation but I recently discovered Neutrogena Pure Glow Cleansing Cushions. They have a scrubby side for cleansing and a smooth side for moisturizing. I must say, my skin has been looking pretty nice while using them. They come in Normal/Dry or Combination/Oily formulations.

Clinique 7-Day Scrub is also nice. It comes in cream or lotion formulations. I use the lotion.
