does anyone else feel that chemical exfoliants (like alpha hydroxy- salacylic acid- or even natural hydroxys) actually harm the skin? some people say yes- they cause photo sensitivity and actually thin the skin and throw off it's shedding cycle. Any thoughts?

IMO.

YES if you DON'T balance your diet with many fresh vegetables, vitamins and drink enough water. Skipping sunscreen and lack of rest and sleep also harm the skin.

NO if you drink plenty of water, eat lots of veggie and vitamins. Always look for food that will do good for your skin. Sunscreen, well rested and enough sleep also do many good things for skin.

That's all I can think of.

I actually feel that a manual exfoliant is a little more invasive. I would much rather put glycolic on my face for 3 minutes and gently wash it off, than scrub the first layer off with apricot seeds. Seems to me that gently peeling is a little better than scraping????
