I was in the ShopRite tonight and saw a big jar of coconut oil- it was solid but in a jar - and on the back it said good for sauces, stir fry, and soft hair and skin....does anyone know anything about using coconut oil on the skin and/or hair? The instructions also said that if using on skin to set bottle into a bowl of hot water first, so the product will liquify. I like the idea of using natural oils for skincare, but have never heard of coconut oil for anything but hair.

Thanks!

Hi Jen,

Here is a one thread on coconut oil and here is another. Both have loads of information, including the type of oil to look for, where to buy the best kind, what ingredients you should look for that are good and which additives are not so good. HTH

Kathy

BTW - has so Jersey warmed up yet? lol - I'll be heading back home in a couple of weeks

hello- thanks, I'll check those out and yes its been very warm here, it should be 90 degrees in the shade before we know it! Spring gets shorter every year.

A friend of mine uses coconut oil on her hair which looks really good. I gonna to try that soon.

lol our winters get longer every year! the highest temperature we've had since about October is about 13 degrees - I'm so jealous!

Hi,

Coconut oil does wonders when heated and applied to dry, frizzy, coarse hair. It's also great for the skin on your elbows, knees and feet. I wouldn't use it on my face because it's very heavy and may clog your pores.

:w00t: :w00t: :w00t: well, I don't want THAT on my face now, do I???

You know, I heard England is in the early beginning stages of the next ice age and that probably in 100 yrs it will be like the arctic!!!

I bought some coconut oil from Whole Foods last night...I used it as a hot oil treatment and it made my hair super soft! I was just wondering if any one has ever tried to use it to style their hair or to oil their scalp...it seems like it might congeal and cause buildup...just wondering?

i don't think it can cause buildup because coconut oil does not contain dimethicone, that causes buildup

I've been using coconut oil on my skin and hair for about 3 years now.  I LOVE it... I'm not really sure if it has helped with anti-aging at all since I am noticing more wrinkles... (so I'm in the market for great anti-aging skin care)

I have to say I enjoy the way my skin feels, it does not clog my pores and has helped a ton with my kerotosis pilaris.  As far as my hair goes, maybe it helps it grow maybe it doesn't.  My hair tends to grow wicked fast regardless.  I do think it helps my hair stay shiny through the processing and I can say that my husband was losing his hair.  Since he's been using the coconut oil (straight from the jar) he is no longer experiencing hair loss.  We use it for everything... eating, topically...  It is a wonderful sunscreen and we've done a few different trials to verify this.  I threw out all my other sunscreens since they are full of chemicals and we now just use the coconut oil.  I get mine online from www.tropicaltraditions.com  they always have specials and it seems to be more expensive in the stores.

Hope this helps someone!

Look for coconut oil in the indian stores, that's where you will find it for cheap, you can find it elsewhere but yes it will be more expensive.

Skin is oil loving. Herbal oils and extracts help nourish and revitalize the skin. I apply coconut oil that helps me to keep looking younger. Coconut oil is a great natural remedy when it comes to protecting and preventing against aging of the skin. Simply massage with coconut oil all over the body will get rid of dry, itchy skin and the oil won't be sticky like lotion tends to be. Massaging the face with coconut oil before going to bed prevents wrinkles.

One rule I kind of believe in is that if the oil sets solid I wouldn't use it on my face. Coconut oil sets in a solid, like butter..... and lard :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

But I def think it's good for hair. Actually on my hair it doesnt even seem like oil. It does not have an olive oil consistancy. I bought mine from Puritan's Pride, which sells alot of pure products. Tons of extracts and vitamins. They ALWAYS have sales, currently a buy 1 get 2 free. (seriously buy 1 get 2 free!).

I see some people swear by using it on their face. I already have oily skin so I probably won't be trying that, but i may crack open that jar again and try it on my dry shins, :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I use Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for a few different things & love it. It's great on dry skin, and I use it to take off my makeup - I tone a few minutes afterwards so my skin isn't oily. It is fantastic for hair however just make sure you do not use too much or your hair will look lank & greasy - just the smallest amount - UNLESS you're having a home day & intend on shampooing a couple of times after a few hours. Another warning I read was to be careful actually using it in the shower as once it dries it will be hard to clean up.
