What's best for mature dry skin exfoliating? Baking soda or is there something at the drug store I could use?

I wouldn't use baking soda, it's sodium so it will draw moisture out of your skin.

I used a tiny bit on my nose, and my skin freaked, as well. I do, however, use baking soda in my hair, after a day of wearing tons of product. I apply it to wet hair, while in the shower, and simply rinse, shampoo and condition. My mom told me to do it when I was about 12 y/o. It works, but I prefer to use a clarifying shampoo.

I use baking soda, and I love it!! I guess it depends on your skin type. I think it's an amazing (and cheap) exfoliation product!!

My dear friend is 60 with a beautiful fair complexion. She has used plain table salt once a week since she was a teen when her mom encouraged her to do so. I tried it on my 53 yr. eastern european medium tone skin and it worked fine as an exfoliant but I think I need more.

anyone found any other sites with beauty secrets ?

I use baking soda occasionally too, and like it-- but I'm 32 years old with oily, thick, non-sensitive skin. It definetly depends on your skin type. From what I understand, salt/sodium is better for oily skin, and sugar is better for dry skin. Maybe just try a teaspoon of fine white sugar, mixing it in with a gentle moisturizing cleanser like Cetaphil, or your normal cleanser, and exfoliate your face with it. After rinsing keep your face a teeny bit damp and generously apply a moisturizer.

I have a book called Beauty 911 by Diane Irons. It's fabulous! It's got tons of tips, tricks, and do-it-yourself beauty stuff. I've been meaning to skim through it and collect the best tips and post a thread. Guess that'll be my project for this weekend!

Baking Soda worked wonders for me. I made a paste of baking soda and water and it dried up a pimple for me overnight. I dunno if it's related but people used to put toothpaste on their pimples, I guess it worked because of the baking soda? Bad things were that it was quite stinging... I guess i'll try mixing with a cleanser.

I thought using sugar was a bad idea? The crystals are square so they have sharp corners that could cause small tears in the skin.

Really loving the baking soda exfoliant. I use it once a week for all over face and 2 times weekly for the oily "T" zone. Works wonders. Someone mentioned following this up with apple cider vinegar, but I rinse and then wash my face with Cuticura Medicated Acne soap, and then use an oil free moisturizer/skin tone cream.

Am I the only person who has never heard of using baking soda as an exfolient? See, this is why I love this site!!!:icon_love

I mixed it with my cleanser and was thinking, "This doesn't even feel abrasive at all." So I scrubbed a little harder and after rinsing my face it was red on my cheeks but my skin was very smoothe! The redness faded quickly but next time I will know not to be so agressive with it.

Did you not notice any dry part after this? I had thought of using it too, but i`m afraid that my skin will be very dry after it. I did have used dead sea salt, but my skin did hurt after it. Now i`m using instant pur gommage from YSL, and it has no grains in it, so my skin doesn`t hurt, i think i will keep using it!!!

My skin had some dry patches prior to using it but not afterwards. I spritzed my face with some toner and moisturized it with emu oil and it felt like i'd just had a facial.

using baking soda as an exfolient works wonders for me. no dry spots or irritation but, like someone mentioned.. u wanna make sure your skin type can handle it so maybe test out a certain area on your face before you decide to use it.. especially if you have sensitive skin. i have sensitive skin and i think it's great.

Hi everyone! Hope this works, I'm new and this is my first post. I use baking soda along with the cetaphil cleanser about once a week. It doesn't leave my skin dry and I haven't had any irritation.

I use a paste of baking soda and Cetaphil or water at least once a week. It works great!! Just don't carried away, massage very gently.

Baking soda as an exfoliant works great for me too. And I also have oily, non- sensitive skin. It also has helped to calm some of my acne inflammation. In the drier months I use it with cetaphil. I also use brown sugar w/ honey, or rice bran (fromnaturewithlove.com). I read that honey can also be as an exfoliant. The writer said to apply the honey and once it started to get tacky tap the skin. Tap for a while then rinse.
