Any tips on dying my fine blond hair darker?

I have natural blond hair, it's very fine and baby soft. I've tried to dye it 3 times before, twice myself and once professionally, none have turned out great. I tried ash brown and it turned a horrible green, I tried strawberry blond and it ended up highlighter orange. I do now know why both those attempts ended so poorly, but when I went to my hairdresser to have it done, it also didn't turn out great. I wanted to go light brown and she could just get a slightly darker blond, she said my hair was just sucking up the dye. After my normally super soft hair felt like hay. This was about 5 years ago and I'd like to try again, any advice or tips?

When you have natural blond hair and want to get it darker it is important to choose a color which is a bit reddish since it would turn out green after highlighting it - but if you are saying that strawberry blond turned out orange, you just have to fin a color between them for the perfect result I guess...maybe there is someone who can help you out better than me!
