I had a lovely trip to the ER early Saturday morning due to an allergic reaction to a Tetracycline. I have no idea why I ever let my dermatologist talk me into taking it. I rarely breakout. The only reason I had four pimples at the time of my appointment, was, due to the fact that my father had only recently passed away. Also, it was getting really close to that time of the month.

I went to my primary care physician on Monday, and he told me that my body is still fighting the Adoxa (Doxycycline/Tetracycline) even though it's already out of my system. He proceeded to give two additional prescriptions.

I still feel absolutely crappy, but my skin looks great. I'm in love with Differin Gel. Bye bye pores and blackheads.

Oh, and in addition to the Adoxa and Differin Gel, the dermatologist prescribed a 10% Benzoyl Peroxide cleanser. She doesn't care for Proactiv. I've been using it (Proactiv) successfully, in my opinion, for years. Well, before the Adoxa incident, the BP cleanser gave me a horrible chemical burn. Horrible! I seriously considered going to the ER. What's with me and allergic reactions that occur only on the weekends? Needless to say, I've gone back to using my beloved Proactiv.

Have you ever experienced an allergic reaction to a prescription medication?

My total hospitalizations due to an allergic reaction: 1

My total emergency room visits due to an allergic reaction: 3

i'm so sorry to hear about your reaction and i'm also very sorry to hear about your father. i hope you're doing okay.

i've only used one prescription medication, differin, and i had no reaction.

I'm so sorry to hear about both your reaction and your father's passing, Kathryn. I'm prone to allergic reactions also, so I know how you feel. There is a certain shampoo at work we use occassionally that will leave a severe chemical burn on my arm and I have to be very careful and wear gloves when using it.

Hope you feel better soon!

Dang..hope you feel better...that's really unusual for anyone to be allergic to Tetracycline..it's one of the antibiotics prescribed when people have a lot of allergies D/T it's low reaction statistics...but ya never know how they are gonna affect you..

So sorry about all that has happened to you. I don't have any true drug allergies. Just some things that make me puke like Flagyl, Floxin, Demerol and Morphine. I hope you start feeling better soon. Take care and pamper yourself a little if you can.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your father's passing...my thoughts are with you. As for your allergic reaction, that sounds just terrible; I'm only grateful that it wasn't (even)worse. But you shouldn't have had to go through that, on top of everything else...Try and get a lot of rest and peace now and be good to yourself. It's wonderful to have you on MUT; we treasure you!

Kathryn Nicole,

I'm really sorry to hear about your dad.

And your allergies. N.E.F.F.

Both things suck in completely different ways.

Stay Cool,

Elisabeth

Sorry to hear about your dad. About the allergic reactions, they do suck. I have lots of skin reactions to many things but only one really bad experience where I had an allergic reaction to penicillin. I ended up in ER in anaphylactic (sp?) shock. They said if I would've arrived 5-10 minutes later I more than likely wouldn't be here now.

Jeanette

OhH! Hugs to you! I'm sorry to hear about your Dad and also the er. I hope things get better for you soon!

Thanks, girls!

Life's getting better.

The chemical burn might have happened because of the product, not a allergic reaction. 10% BP is very very strong and can easily burn; if you had to use BP, probably would be best to begin at 5% (even 5% can irritate the skin)

I didn't mean to refer to the BP incident as an allergic reaction.
