I just wanted to rave about this to all the other skin care junkies on this board.

I got "Skin Type Solutions" about a month ago and its advice has made such a big difference in my skin. Basically your determine your skin's "personality" and then flip to the chapter that teaches you how to take care of it. The categories are:

Oily or Dry

Sensitive or Resistant

Pigmented or Non Pigmented

Tight or Wrinkled.

I'll admit that I've learned a lot of the things she tells you through trial and error, but its still quite fascinating. And if anything can help me aviod future errors, I welcome it.

Here are some things I learned about my skin type (Combo Oily/Dry, Super Sensitive, Pigmented, and Tight)

-Stay away from AHA/Glycolic Acid. For me it triggers cystic acne break-outs.

-If you want to hydrate your skin, add water. If you want to cut oil, use oil. This is something I never really thought about. Why was I adding more moisturizer lotions to my sensitive/acne prone skin when it just wants water to help the occasional dryness? And why was I using water based cleansers to try and remove oil? Now I mist on Shu Uemura Depsea Facial Mist when my skin needs a kick of hydration, and cleanse with Shu Cleansing Oil to mix with the natural oils on my face and really clear them out of my pores.

-If something obscure really works for your skin, use it. Nothing heals the scaly dry skin around my eyes like Petroleum Jelly. But I didn't want to keep using it because I would hear horror stories about how bad it is for your skin. Why did I let that stop me when I already knew it worked well for me? Why did I spend more money on fancy cremes that didn't work half as well?

-Prevention is preferable to repair work. Drinking lots of water and wearing sunscreen now is so much easier then fighting premature signs of aging later. Get in the habit now.

My skin went haywire between getting engaged and turning 25. Since then I've been determined to find something that would help me clear up before my wedding. I settled on a skin care regime about 2 weeks ago and am dedicated to sticking with it for 2 full months without slacking off. I'll report back and update how its going.

Also, if anyone wants find out more about this, I'd recommend looking for the book at your library or going to one of Dr. Baumann's websites. While the book is fantastic and I've learned a lot, I don't think you need to shell out $35 for it when you can get the info for free.

Wow! I wish I had seen that thread back in March. I haven't been this excited about taking proper care of my skin... ever! LOL!

I just got this book a couple of weeks ago, and am so glad I did. I found out I'm a DSNW. I can already see a glow in my skin since I stopped using the Proactiv system I was previously, and following the recommendations in the book.

I love this book! Since I started using the recommended products my skin has been the best it's ever been in my life.
